The financial sector is undergoing a strong transformation as new global competitors from outside the industry are entering the financial business. Due to the global competition and technological development, many companies have been forced to change their operations and are shifting from a product-driven world to a customer-centric model. Businesses in the global economy depend on each other's expertise. Networking, co-operation and open information have become more common in global economy and innovations have become the valuable intangible capital of companies. The subject of this thesis was a program called OP goes Silicon Valley. In the program selected employees of OP are sent to Silicon Valley California for a month long work exchange. The aim of the program is for the participants of the program to develop their understanding of trends, new business models and operators and create networks that can support OP's strategy and be potential partners in the future. The purpose of the program is to support the strategic renewal of OP, whose focus is shifting from a traditional financial operator to a multidisciplinary service company. The theoretical framework of this thesis covers business operation in a digital and global environment, as well as innovations and the development of an innovation culture in organizations. The theoretical framework also deals with networking, new forms of business co-operation, and the innovation ecosystem of Silicon Valley. The research strategy of this thesis was the case study. The research methods of the study were literature, open interviews, blogs from people who have participated the program and participatory observation, which took place in Silicon Valley in November 2017. The aim of the thesis was to gather feedback on the first season of OP goes Silicon Valley and to make recommendations for further development of the program. The first season of the OP goes Silicon Valley program developed the participants' own competencies and created an understanding of the global market situation and trends. New networks were also created during the first season of the program. The challenges of the first season were the objectives of the program and the continuous turnover of OP ́s employees. A new operating model of the program was created as a development proposal for the program. Learning new things and the active upgrading of competence is playing a big role in working life in the future. The OP goes Silicon Valley program enables participants to upgrade their skills to meet the needs of a renewed working life. It also supports OP's strategic renewal in global competition. In the center of the OP goes Silicon Valley program are company's employees. The program is an open-minded and innovative experiment from a large financial institution to support the company ́s strategical change. The case study is not repeatable as a research and is not intended to be generalizable, but is intended to obtain detailed and in- depth information of the case being investigated. The case study is characterized by the fact that the researcher's own experiences are reflected in the results of the research....

Osaamisen johtaminen osana hotellin vastaanoton perehdytystä
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2018)
Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli tehdä toimeksiantajalle perehdyttäjän opas hotellin vastaanottoon sekä vaikuttaa rakentavasti perehdytyksen toimintamalliin perehdytettävän yksilön kautta. Toimeksiantajana toimi Radisson Blu Plaza Helsinki hotelli.

The commissioner of this thesis is a local association. It produces afternoon activities for children in elementary school and operates in the metropolitan area. The objective was to create development proposals regarding workplace communication and interaction. These were explored through a workshop. Topics and discussions that emerged combined with theoretical background provided ideas for communication and interaction improvement. This thesis focuses on the organized functional workshop and includes qualitative research elements, because the examined work community is small. The information was collected through a brief questionnaire, workshop discussions and a SWOT analysis carried out as a self-assessment task. The data were processed by classifying it into themes. The theoretical framework of this thesis depicts the characteristics of community, atmosphere, well-being and interaction at the workplace. In addition, the components of well-being and motivation are explained by Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs. This theoretical framework was also used as a tool when group conversation results were themed. Interaction and communication are explained from different perspectives in a dedicated section. The collected data reveal three most needed development themes in the work community. These were lack of feedback, unclear working rules and missing uninterrupted time between colleagues. The first development proposal is to have regular one-to-one feedback discussions between the manager and the employee. The second development proposal is to set up common work rules and decide personal and team targets at the beginning of the working season. The third proposal is a monthly team lunch or after-work meal to improve group spirit and enable undisturbed and easygoing time between colleagues. The objective of the thesis was achieved, the commissioner received concrete proposals for developing the work community. Discussions during the workshop provided added value to the commissioner. All participants were given the opportunity to exchange ideas that generated information that can be used in the future development of the work community....

The objective of the thesis was to research the alcohol import industry in Finland as well as to draw up a business plan for a start-up company, importing XO quality alcohol products. The focus was to investigate the profitability and lucrativeness of the alcohol import industry. Market research was also conducted to function as an analysis to ensure a complete understanding of the alcohol industry in Finland and to cover all areas and risks of an import business. The research was approached by drawing up questions for interviews. These questions were sent to alcohol import companies to learn what the industry is like and how to establish an alcohol import company. Companies and their agents were also shadowed. The business idea and the plan for the start-up company were modelled into a customer journey and a SWOT-analysis was created for risk management. Additionally, a variety of statistics was also interpreted to estimate consumption, sales and distribution of alcohol in Finland. The results can be found in the thesis, whereas the business plan can be surveyed as the product of the thesis, which was evaluated by one of the companies interviewed. The research revealed that the alcohol industry in Finland is strictly controlled by current laws, but competition in the industry is healthy as a functioning market economy requires. Competition among the larger companies in the alcohol industry mainly focuses on covering multiple product segments and nationwide distribution. Small and medium sized companies instead often focus on competing in individual segments as well as dwell in more rare and specific product categories. Based on the received feedback on the business plan, financial risks and an overly optimistic view of the quite narrow product segment are the main concerns considering the potential success. However, according to the feedback the potential of the future company seems bright and rather positive. It can be concluded that the success of start-up businesses relies on the initial capital and on the utilization of both new and old networks. Currently the described model for the business plan only focuses on importing high quality alcohol products, yet it is likely that in future the company will expand its product portfolio to cover wines of equal quality. Cooperation with other companies is also considered possible. The business plan should be alternated according to rising needs and market research extended to cover the new targeted markets and competitors....

Services from the Visit Helsinki platform were researched and compared based on factors that are important for Chinese travellers. A comparison chart was created based on the results. In order to analyse the data, a SWOT analysis was created. In addition, an idea workshop dedicated to the topic was also attended for the thesis in the Technopolis of Vantaa. The opportunity was used to create a potential future service concept for the Chinese travellers in the Helsinki region. One of the most important results was that the Chinese traveller differ significantly from, for example, Western travellers. The Helsinki region already serves its Chinese travellers relatively well, but there is certainly room for improvement. Lately, there have been big advancements, such as in the field of payment method possibilities, and it seems that a bright future is only some simple solutions away. There are great possibilities, for instance, in services related to activities in nature and shopping....
