Development of a Machine Vision-Guided Irrigation Prototype for Organic Rhubarb Cultivation
Ehrs, Mikael
This thesis develops and validates a low cost, Raspberry Pi based machine vision prototype for irrigation in small scale organic rhubarb cultivation. The objective is to detect rhubarb crowns reliably from a downward facing camera under real field conditions and translate detections into a robust actuation signal (implemented as a GPIO driven LED as a stand in for a future solenoid valve), thereby demonstrating feasibility and identifying key deployment constraints for precision irrigation on small farms.

An engineering based method was used. Overhead images were collected on the case farm using a Raspberry Pi camera mounted to an ATV drawn watering platform, capturing realistic variation in weed cover, plant size, shadows, and motion. The dataset was balanced and expanded using controlled augmentations, manually annotated with bounding boxes (single class: rhubarb), and split into train/validation/test sets. An initial TensorFlow Lite SSD–MobileNet approach proved impractical due to software/dependency constraints, motivating a switch to an Ultralytics YOLO based pipeline trained on GPU in Google Colab. The final model was deployed on a Raspberry Pi 4 in a real time inference loop (Picamera2 + OpenCV), with confidence percentage filtering and simple multiframe debouncing to stabilize the GPIO output.

The baseline YOLO11n detector achieved strong validation performance (precision ≈0,90, recall ≈0,86, mAP@0,5 ≈0,939, mAP@0,5:0,95 ≈0,708; derived F1 ≈0,88). However, pronounced domain shift was observed: indoor or non field textures could trigger moderate to high rhubarb confidence. Adding diverse “out of domain” negative images (Places365) and retraining substantially reduced high confidence false positives while preserving field utility. On Raspberry Pi 4 (CPU only, with onscreen visualization), runtime performance was in the low single digit Frames Per Second range; with multi frame debouncing, end to end indicator response was ~1 second at slow driving pace, and printed picture tests showed fairly reliable triggering over pictures of most mature plants. Field tests are yet to be done, but the solutions show promise.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore how mothers experience the support they receive from their close ones during the breastfeeding process. The research questions were: “How do mothers experience support from their close ones during breastfeeding?”, “How do close one’s support mothers during the breastfeeding process?”, and “What development opportunities exist regarding the support mothers receive during breastfeeding?”

The study was conducted as a survey involving 81 women from Ostrobothnia who had breastfed their child within the last three years. A mixed-method approach was used, and the results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis. Ramona T. Mercer’s theory "Becoming a Mother" served as the theoretical framework.

The results show that mothers perceive partner support as important, although sometimes lacking in knowledge and understanding of the emotional aspects of breastfeeding. Many described their partner as an important source of both practical and emotional support. Experiences with
healthcare varied; some felt well cared for, while others reported insufficient support and inadequate information provided to partners. Support from friends and family was generally perceived as positive, while older generations sometimes expressed negative attitudes toward breastfeeding, creating insecurity and pressure. Several women called for more accessible and clearer information, as well as easier ways to seek help in case of urgent breastfeeding issues.

This Thesis explored alternative possibilities for converter room ventilation and frequency converter cooling on a Finnish tanker. The research was carried out in accordance with the principles of constructive research with the aim of solving the most important problems in cooling which in this case were water- and salt exposure of frequency converters. The research was based on HVAC technology theories and field research on the vessel which led to ideas for alternative implementation methods for cooling solutions.

Solutions for drying supply air were rejected in early stage due to the massive modifications and new installations they required, and it was decided to use already existing cooling systems that were present on the vessel. The solutions emphasized the possibility of using both a ventilation fan and also air cooled by vapor-compression system together. In these solution proposals, the ducting of supply air and the ducting of cold air were changed.

The modification works were implemented by the client based on the issues identified in this study and the solution proposals made in the study. The result has been a better-functioning cooling system which will also be implemented on the sister ship.

Managing Seafarer's Career Transition To Shore-Based Roles
Castro, Leobert
This study examines the professional transition experiences of Deck Department officers moving from shipboard service to shore-based employment. Despite the important role deck officers play in global shipping, many encounter significant challenges in securing shore-side positions that adequately reflect their operational expertise.

The primary objective of this research is to identify the systemic barriers preventing deck officers and to analyze the factors influencing their success in landing roles within port operations, vessel management, maritime surveying, and education. The paper uses a mixed-methods approach and identifies industry job trends and insights of those who have successfully transitioned into shore-based roles, such as maritime instructors. This research was motivated by the observation that while many seafarers recognize the eventual necessity of transitioning to shore-based careers, they lack the actionable guidance and structured pathways to initiate the move.

Initial findings indicate a significant "alignment gap," where the specialized technical competencies of deck officers are frequently misaligned with the requirements of entry-level shore-based positions. Furthermore, the results highlight a lack of institutional support and career mapping for departing seafarers. This study offers evidence-based recommendations for maritime educational institutions, shipping companies, and individual seafarers to foster a more structured, and realistic transition process for deck officers. This ensures the retention of experienced maritime talent within the broader industry ecosystem.
