Tietokoneiden viihdekäytön vaikutukset ikäihmisen sosiaaliseen elämään

Abstract

Tämä tutkimus oli osa isompaa projektia, jossa tutkittiin ikääntyvien ihmisten tietokoneen viihdekäyttöä ja sen vaikutusta elämään. Tutkimuksen toimeksiantajana toimi Lahden ammattikorkeakoulun tietojenkäsittelyn yliopettaja Torsti Rantapuska. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli tarkastella mitä vaikutuksia ikäihmisen sosiaalisessa elämässä ilmenee tietokoneen viihdekäytön myötä.

Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin laadullisin menetelmin käyttäen teemahaastattelua. Tutkimusaineisto saatiin haastattelemalla kymmentä yli 65-vuotiasta ikäihmistä Lahden alueelta. Haastattelussa ikäihmisillä oli vapaus vastata laajasti käsiteltäviin kysymyksiin teemahaastattelurungon pohjalta.

Tutkimustulosten perusteella ikäihmiset hankkivat tietokoneen lähtökohtaisesti tarpeeseen ja sitä käytettiin arkea helpottavien asioiden hoitamiseen. Tutkimuksessa selvisi, että ikäihmisen sosiaalinen elämä voi rikastua tietokoneen käyttöönoton myötä, vaikka he kokivat tietokoneen välityksellä käydyt keskustelut toisarvoisiksi verrattuna kasvotusten ja puhelimen välityksellä käytyyn kanssakäymiseen. Tehdyistä haastatteluista kävi ilmi, että ikäihmiset eivät kokeneet tietokoneen käytön vievän aikaa kasvotusten tapahtuvalta kanssakäymiseltä.

Sosiaalinen media, pikaviestipalvelut sekä sähköpostin käyttö helpottavat ikäihmisten yhteydenpitoa kauempana asuvien sukulaisten sekä ystävien kanssa. Tietokone voi myös toimia yhdistävänä tekijänä eri sukupolvien välillä lastenlasten auttaessa isovanhempiaan tietoteknisissä ongelmissa.

This thesis was part of a larger project concerning elderly people's computer use for entertainment purposes. The purpose of this thesis was to examine how the use of a computer for entertainment purposes affects on elderly people´s social life. The study was commissioned by Torsti Rantapuska, a principal lecturer of Information Technology at Lahti University of Applied Sciences.

This study was a qualitative research conducted by a theme interview. The material was collected by interviewing ten over 65-year-olds from the area of Lahti. The interviews were theme based in order for the respondents to have the freedom to answer extensively to all of the questions from the based on the theme.

The study results indicate that elderly people´s social life could enrichen after starting to use a computer. Based on the interviews and former studies, it seemed that computers were mainly purcahsed for a certain need and that elderly people used them to ease daily chores. It became clear during the interviews that elderly people did not feel that using the computer took too much time from real-life interaction. Virtual conversations were seen secondary when compared to face-to-face interactions or phone calls.

Social media, instant messaging applications and the use of email has made communication easier between the elderly people and their distant relatives and friends. The results also show that computers bring the elderly people closer to their grandchildren. Problems with computers are a good reason for the elderly people to ask their grandchildren to come and visit them.
