Backstage Collection : Tuotesuunnittelu

Abstract

Opinnäytetyö on tuotesuunnittelupohjainen ja keskittyy uuden tuoteryhmän Backstage Collectionin tuotteiden suunnitteluun tulevaisuuden yritykselle. Inspiraatio uudelle mallistolle tuli vahvasti korutaiteen puolelta. Tämän vapaamman suunnittelupohjan valjastaminen viimeistellyksi tuotteeksi muotoilijalta, oli yksi monista mielenkiintoisista lähestymistavoista suunnitteluprosessissa.

Omien tapojen havainnointi toimi lähtökohtana uuden luomiselle, vapauttaen suunnittelua jarruttavia tekijöitä ja kasvattaen näkemystä muotoilijana. Uuden malliston kohderyhmäksi valikoituivat esiintyvät artistit läh-tökohdistani käyttää vaihtoehtoisia materiaaleja sekä valjastaa erilaista ilmaisua mahdollistavia elementtejä koruun. Suunnitteluprosessin alkuun auttoi mallistojen välisten eroavaisuuksien ja ominaisuuksien selvittäminen. Työssä perehdyttiin siihen, mitä eri kokonaisuudet edustavat ja mitä näillä haluttiin ilmentää. Tuotesuunnittelun apuna toimi kyselytutkimus artisteille, asiakasryhmästä tehdyt havainnot korujen käytöstä sekä määritellyt avainsanat uudelle mallistolle. Opinnäytetyö selvittää myös sen, mitä pidän esiintymiskoruna ja millaisia ominaisuuksia artistit kaipaavat korulta.

Prosessi oli syvä, mielenkiintoinen sekä henkilökohtainen, mutta ennen kaikkea se mahdollisti uudenlaisen tekemisen tason ja antoi innostusta yritystoiminnan kynnyksellä. Opinnäytetyön myötä valmistuivat ensimmäiset tuoteryhmän mallistot, ”Hattara” sekä ”Piece of Rock” -nahkakorumalliston suunnitelmat materiaalitestauksineen. Prosessi johti lopulta myös artisti -yhteistyöhön.

The thesis is product design based and it focuses on the design of a new product group called ‘Backstage Collection’ for a future company. The inspiration for the new collection came strongly from jewelry art. Harnessing this less restricted base for design to a finished design product was one of the many interesting approaches in the design process.

A starting point for the new creation was also a process of self-reflection. Observing one’s own methods was helpful in releasing some hindering factors in the planning process and helped in increasing one’s vision as a designer. Because the starting point was to use alternative materials and to harness different expression to the jewelry, performing artists became the target group.

Analysing the characteristics of the collections and their differences helped get on with the planning. The process explored what the different collections represent and what they should to embody. A survey among performing artists, observing their use of jewelry and the keywords defining the new collection helped with the product design. The thesis also explains what the concept of ‘performing jewelry’ means to me and what features performing artists are looking for in jewelry in stage.

The process was deep, interesting and personal, but above all, it allowed the adoption of a new level of doing things and new enthusiasm at the doorstep of entrepreneurship. The thesis resulted in the first collection in the product group,”Hattara”, and as well as plans and material testings for a leather jewelry collection called ”Piece of Rock”. The process also led to artist co-operation.
