Avoimen etsijän vaellus : ohjaajan roolit devising-prosessissa

Abstract

Opinnäytetyö pyrkii kiteyttämään kirjoittajan omia havaintoja devising-teatterin tekijänä sekä jäsentelemään ohjaajan rooleja ryhmälähtöisesti tuotettavan esityksen harjoitusprosessissa. Opinnäytetyö pohjaa niin kirjoittajan omiin kokemuksiin devisingista kuin myös luettuun materiaaliin. Opinnäytetyö voisi toimia eräänlaisena ohjekirjasena devising-ohjaajalle tai kenelle tahansa ryhmälähtöisestä teatterista kiinnostuneelle. Lähteinä opinnäytetyössä on käytetty erinäisiä devising-työtavasta, nykyteatterista sekä improvisaatiosta kertovia teoksia. Lähdeteoksia ovat olleet mm. Keith Johnstonen Impro, Anne Bogartin Ohjaaja valmistautuu sekä Alison Oddeyn Devising theatre.

Tutkielma listaa aluksi devising-työtavan peruspiirteitä, pohtien työtavan mahdollisuuksia ja sitä, miten se eroaa perinteisestä teatterista. Opinnäytetyön perustana on ajatus siitä, että devising on teatterin tekemisen asenne, jossa teatteriin suhtaudutaan ryhmätaiteena. Tämän jälkeen tutkielma siirtyy pohtimaan tärkeintä tutkimuskysymystä, sitä mikä on tai voisi olla ohjaajan rooli devising-prosessissa. Opinnäytetyö ehdottaa ohjaajan roolin jaettavaksi neljään osaan, jotka ovat dramaturgi, ryhmän ohjaaja, prosessin ohjaaja ja esityksen ohjaaja. Kappale erittelee kunkin roolin merkitystä esityksen valmistamisen prosessissa. Seuraava kappale pohtii ohjaajan haasteita ja sitä, kuinka näihin haasteisiin tulisi vastata. Lopun yhteenvedossa pohditaan vielä kevyesti ohjaajan kädenjälkeä ryhmälähtöisesti tuotettavassa teoksessa.

This thesis strives to crystallise the writer’s own observations as a director of devising theatre and to analyse the director’s role in the process of making devised performances. The thesis is based on the writer’s own experience and on written material. The work could be perceived as a manual for a devising director or anyone interested in the matter. Source materials include several books on devised theatre and improvisation, such as Keith Johnstone’s Impro, Anne Bogart’s A Director Prepares and Alison Oddey’s Devising Theatre.

To start off, this thesis lists the basic characteristics of devising theatre and how it differs from traditional theatre. These thoughts are based on the idea of devising theatre being approached as group art. Then the work continues on the key question of what is or could be the director’s role in a devising theatre process. This part proposes the director’s role to be dealt in four parts: playwright, group leader, process leader and the performance’s director. The chapter explains the importance of each role in the preparation of a performance. The next chapter discusses the challenges of a director and how these challenges should be met. The concluding summary reflects on the director’s handprint in a devised theatre piece.
