Äitinä uudessa maassa ja uudessa kulttuurissa

Abstract

Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli kartoittaa Mikkelin maahanmuuttajaäitien kokemuksia äitiydestä Suomessa sekä tuoda heidän avun tarve näkyväksi. Työn tavoitteena oli selvittää, millaisia haasteita maahanmuuttajaäideillä on ollut sekä millaista apua ja tukea he ovat saaneet. Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin yhteistyössä Mikkelin maahanmuuttotoimiston sekä Monikulttuurikeskus Mimosan kanssa. Tutkimuksessa saatua tietoa voidaan käyttää hyödyksi maahanmuuttajien kanssa tehtävässä työssä.

Opinnäytetyön teoreettisessa viitekehyksessä käsitellään maahanmuuttajien kotoutumista, äitiyttä uudessa maassa sekä äitiyteen ja maahanmuuttoon liittyviä tukimuotoja. Tutkimus perustui määrälliseen tutkimukseen, jossa on myös laadullisen tutkimuksen piirteitä. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin kyselylomakkeella. Kyselylomake koostui strukturoiduista ja avoimista kysymyksistä. Tutkimusaineisto analysoitiin Webropol-ohjelman avulla. Vastauksia saatiin yhteensä 17.

Maahanmuuttajat tarvitsevat kotoutumiseen paljon erityistä tukea. Kotoutuminen on pitkä prosessi, joka kestää monia vuosia. Tutkimuksen mukaan jopa yli kymmenen vuotta Suomessa asuneilla maahanmuuttajaäideillä oli haasteita suomen kielen kanssa ja erilaisen kulttuurin hyväksymisessä. Äitien haasteet liittyivät pääosin suomen kielen haasteellisuuteen, sosiaalisten verkostojen vähäisyyteen ja kulttuurieroihin. Äidit olivat saaneet apua äitiyden haasteisiin monilta eri tahoilta, mutta enemmänkin tukea haluttaisiin. Lasten hoitoon liittyvissä asioissa tarvittaisiin enemmän apua. Erilaisista palveluista ja työmahdollisuuksista oli saatu tarpeeksi ohjausta ja neuvontaa ja pääosin tiedettiin, mistä apua löytää.

The purpose of this study was to survey foreign mothers’ experiences of motherhood in Finland as well as their need for support. The survey was conducted in Mikkeli municipality and the aim was to find out how foreign mothers coped with the reality of bearing and raising children in a new country and culture and the forms of support they had received. The study was conducted in cooperation with the Mikkeli immigration office and Multicultural center Mimosa. The findings will be beneficial in improving services for immigrants.

The research framework includes a discussion on integration, motherhood in a new country and forms of social support available. A quantitative research method was applied to this study with a structured questionnaire, which comprised well-structured, easy to understand and open ended questions for data collection. The research material was analysed using the Webropol programme. The total number of responses in the survey was 17.

The study showed that foreigners in general needed a lot of support in order to integrate in the new society, which evidently was a time consuming process. It was evident from the data collected that respondents who had lived as long as over ten years in Finland still had problems with language, culture and identity. The Finnish language, child care, social networks and cultural differences were the most challenging issues. Support services were available to the mothers from various sources but there was still need for more help especially in child care. Though these problems were raised, the respondents acknowledged to have received support by different social offices, information on work opportunities and information on where to seek and access social services.
