Buffalo Express : Bebop-tyylinen sävellysprojekti ja siitä koostuva sävellyskonsertti keväällä 2016

Abstract

Opinnäytetyössäni tutkin bebop-tyyliä säveltämällä kahdeksan kappaletta, jotka esitettiin konsertissa huhtikuussa 2016. Perusajatuksena oli säveltää vanhoihin, kuuluisiin bebopteemoihin ja niiden sointukiertoihin uusia melodioita. Tämä oli yleinen tapa bebopaikakaudella. Bebop-aikakausi, eli suunnilleen vuodet 1940 -1955, oli hyvin tärkeä vaihe jazzin historiassa: silloin saatiin merkittäviä musiikillisia ideoita harmonian, melodian ja rytmin käsittelyssä. Nuo ideat toimivat ja vaikuttavat vielä nykyäänkin, ja niitä edelleenkin kehitellään modernissa jazzissa. Sävelsin kahdeksan erityylistä bebop-kappaletta kvintetille, jonka kokoonpano oli saksofoni, trumpetti, piano, basso ja rummut. Seuraavassa luettelossa kerron lyhyesti sävellyksistäni ja siitä mitkä alkuperäiset kappaleet ovat olleet niiden esikuvana: 1) Juxterity (Anthropology): Nopea Bb-rytmikiertokappale 2) Blues for Toots (Blues for Alice): 12 tahdin Bird-blues 3) Buffalo Express (Cherokee): Nopea bebop, esikuvansa mukaan yksinkertainen melodia 4) Assurance (Confirmation): Sointukierto perustuu esikuvalleen, mutta kappale on hidas jazzballadi 5) The Songbird of St. Michael (All the Things You Are): Latin-tyylinen, myös kappaleen introssa on aineksia alkuperäisestä 6) The Pearl (Cherokee): Hidas, kaunis balladi 7) Blue Weety (Billie´s Bounce): 12 tahdin Bb-blueskierto 8) Don Quijote (Donna Lee): Nopea bebop-teema Sävellysprojektini oli opettavainen: havaitsin, että on hyödyllistä keskittyä rauhassa yhden musiikkityylin opetteluun; jos hallitsee yhden tyylin hyvin, siitä on hyötyä myös kaikkeen muuhunkin musisointiin.

In my final project, I studied bebop style by composing eight pieces that were performed in a concert in April 2016. The main idea was to compose new melodies to existing, famous chord changes, which was a common thing in the Bebop era. The Bebop era, approximately years 1940-1955, was a significant time in the history of jazz: musicians got revolutionary ideas in harmony, melody and rhythm. Those ideas are still valid and widely used and they are developed further in contemporary jazz. I composed eight different types of bebop pieces for a quintet: saxophone, trumpet, piano, bass and drums. The following is a list of the pieces and the original pieces their chord changes are based on: 1) Juxterity (Anthropology): A fast rhythm change piece in Bb. 2) Blues for Toots (Blues for Alice): A 12-bar Bird blues. 3) Buffalo Express (Cherokee): A fast bebop theme, a simple, almost childish melody, as in the original. 4) Assurance (Confirmation): The chord changes are almost the same as in the original piece, but this one is a slow jazz ballad. 5) The Songbird of St. Michael (All the Things You Are): In Latin style. Also the intro bears a likeness to the original one. 6) The Pearl (Cherokee): A slow and beautiful ballad. 7) Blue Weety (Billie’s Bounce): A 12-bar Bb blues. 8) Don Quijote (Donna Lee): A fast bebop melody. This project taught me a lot. I noticed that it is useful to concentrate on one musical style at a time. If you master a certain style, it benefits musicianship overall.
