Wordpress-pohjaisen blogisivuston ulkoasun ja toimintojen uudistus

Abstract

Insinöörityönä uudistettiin Wordpress-sisällönhallintajärjestelmää hyödyntävä blogisivusto. Uudistuksen tekijä oli työn tekovaiheessa määräaikaisessa työsuhteessa tilaajan kanssa. Työhön kuului uudistaa vuodesta 2008 käytössä olleen sivuston alkuperäinen ulkoasu ja lisätä siihen uusia toiminnallisuuksia. Tavoitteena oli saada blogisivuston kävijämäärät nousuun ja tehdä siitä helppokäyttöinen.

Uudistettu sivusto hyödyntää PHP-, HTML5-, CSS3- ja JavaScript-ohjelmointikieliä. Wordpress 4.2.3:sta käytössä on multisite-versio. Sivuston rakentamisessa hyödynnettiin Wordpressin tarjoamia ulkoasua muokkaavia teemoja ja uusia toiminnallisuuksia tarjoavia lisäosia. Sivustolla käytetty Hickory teema muokattiin lapsiteema-ominaisuuden avulla. Jokaiselle sivutyypille rakennettiin oma sivupohja. Käyttäjien ikähaarukka ja taitotaso otettiin huomioon sivuston rakennusvaiheessa. Sivuston ylläpitoa pyrittiin automatisoimaan mahdollisuuksien mukaan.

Kävijämäärät sivustolla lähtivät nousuun uuden sivuston julkaisun jälkeen. Lopputuloksessa on otettu huomioon sivuston optimoiminen mobiililaitteille.

Sivuston ulkoasullisesti ja toiminnallisesti käyttökelpoisena pysyminen tarvitsee jatkuvaa uudistumista. Tällä tavoin saadaan sivuston elinkaarta pidemmäksi. Varsinkin ulkoasullisten trendien mukana kulkeminen kuitenkin vaatii koko sivuston uudistuksen, jotta sivusto pysyisi helppokäyttöisenä.

The goal of the final year project was to renew a blog website by utilizing the WordPress content management system. At the time of the renewal, the researcher had a fixed-term employment contract with the commissioning company. It was part of the job description to update the original layout from 2008 and add new functionalities to the updated version. The main objective of the project was to increase the visitor count on the blog site and make it as user friendly as possible.

The renewed blog website utilizes the PHP, HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript programming languages, and the WordPress 4.2.3 system is a multisite version. The layout editing themes of Wordpress, and new additional parts providing functionalities were utilized in the creation of the website. The hickory theme used on the website was edited with the help of the child theme feature. A custom made theme was created for each type of site. When the renewed version of the website was still under construction, age distribution and skill level were taken into account, as well as automating the maintenance of the website as much as possible.

After releasing the renewed website, visitor count increased considerably. Optimization of the website for mobile devices has been taken into account in the final version of the website.

Constant upkeep is required in order to maintain the website’s layout and usefulness. This way the life cycle of the website is longer. However, if wanting to keep up with the visual layout trends, updating of the whole website is required in order to maintain user friendliness.
