Aktivistitaiteilijasta artivismiin : yli 50-vuotiaita seksuaali- ja sukupuolivähemmistöjä näkyväksi tekemässä

Abstract

Tässä artikkelissani pohdin oman Kaikki sateenkaaren värit Näkyväksi!-yhteisötaideprojektini kautta kysymystä voiko yhteisötaiteellinen työskentely toimia aktivismin tavoin ja vaikuttaa 50+ ikäisten seksuaali- ja sukupuolivähemmistöihin kuuluvien näkyväksi tekemiseen. Avaan yhteisötaiteen merkitystä ja otan mukaan esimerkkejä siitä miten yhteisötaidetta on käytetty aktivistisessa mielessä. Teoreettisia näkökulmia etsin vastakuvan, performatiivisuuden sekä queer-kuvan käsitteistä ja tutkin sitä mitä kuvat ”tekevät” eli missä mielessä taiteellisen työn juuri seksuaali- ja sukupuolivähemmistöjen kohdalla voi mieltää aktivismiksi.

Identiteetin kasvuun tarjosin välineitä työpajamenetelmäni avulla, jossa tutkitaan omaa minäkuvaa jo olemassa olevien valokuvien ja kirjoittamisen kautta. Prosessi ja matka kohti uutta valokuvaa kuljetaan yhdessä kaikkien osallistujien kanssa toisiaan kuunnellen ja tukien. Jokaisella oli mahdollisuus esittää itsensä juuri sellaisena kuin haluaa. Uuden omakuvan tuottaminen tämän projektin aikana oli osallistujille paitsi innostavaa, myös tarkan ajatteluprosessin tulos. Näytteille asetetut kuvat ovat siis harkittuja itsensä esittämisen tekoja.

Huomionarvoista tässä yhteisötaideprojektissani oli se, että tämä yhteisöllinen työskentely oli osallistujille myös voimauttavaa ja yhteiskunnallisena aktivistisena toimintana nosti osallistujien itsetuntoa. Projektiini osallistuneet halusivat olla mukana luomassa valokuvia, joilla toistetaan toisin sitä kulttuurista kuvastoa, joka näyttäytyy muuten hyvin heteronormatiivisena.

Päädyn tämän yhteisötaideprojektini kohdalla artivismin käsitteeseen, koska omassa taiteellisessa työskentelyssäni näen taiteen poliittisena välineenä tärkeiksi katsomieni asioiden muuttamisessa ja yhteiskunnallisessa vaikuttamisessa.

In this article I introduce my socially engaged art project All the colours of the rainbow. In this project I worked with 50+ aged people that identified themselves as belonging to sexual or gender minorities. I am interested in art work where I use ”activist” methods, and in this project the aim was to influence the societal discussion about sexual and gender minorities by interrogating the presentation of sexual and gender minorities in the contemporary visual culture.

I base my work on a discussion about community-engaged art and dialogical art, and also discuss the work of artists who have influenced my project because they share similar ways of thinking about community art and have previously combined art and activism in their works. As conceptual tools in order to theoretically grasp the subject, I use the notions on ”counter-picture”, performativity and queer-picture, and with these tools I ponder what pictures do and why this artwork in particular with sexual and gender minorities could be called activism.

I argue that community based art work is important also because of it`s potentially empowering effects for the participants. In this project the participants experienced the activist dimension of the project as very empowering, but in addition, our working method included the use of writing about experiences and choosing and discussing pictures relevant for the persons` experiences. In this way the project consisted of much more than producing the visible ”end product” – the exhibitions: the project also provided a safe space for the participants where they could share their thoughts and experiences to each other. This journey of the project proceded with these dialogues towards planning and shooting the pictures, self-performances of the participants, which were then shown at the exhibition.

I conclude by proposing that in the case of activist art we could talk about ”artivism”, where an artist works with artistic mediums in order to fight injustice and oppression and in order to vision and build alternative futures. In this case the artivist work in particular aimed to interrogate and destabilise the current norms of visibility.
