Digitaalinen opaskirja maahanmuuttajaperheiden päivähoidon aloituksen helpottamiseksi

Abstract

Tämän toiminnallisen opinnäytteen tavoitteena oli tuottaa digitaalinen opaskirja maahanmuuttajaperheille päivähoidon aloittamisen tueksi. Työelämän edustajana oli Espoon kaupungin varhaiskasvatus, joka myös antoi resurssejaan tämän työn toteuttamisen tueksi. Tehtävänannon taustalla oli vieraskielisten lasten kasvava osuus erityisesti pääkaupunkiseudun varhaiskasvatuksessa. Espoossa tämä osuus vaihteli alueittain ja toimintayksiköittäin ollen tämän projektin ajankohtana keskimäärin jo lähes 20 %.

Kielimuuri ja kulttuurilliset erot vaikeuttavat ja hidastavat maahanmuuttajaperheiden kotouttamisprosessia. Opaskirjan tarkoituksena oli antaa vieraasta kulttuurista tulevalle lapselle sekä hänen huoltajalleen tietoa tavanomaisesta varhaiskasvatuksen arjesta ja toimintaperiaatteista. Opaskirjan tulisi myös helpottaa varhaiskasvatuksen henkilöstön työtä, kun huoltajat ja lapsi voisivat sen avulla valmistautua päivähoidon aloitukseen ja toimintaan.

Opaskirjan kehittämisessä käytettiin Jyväskylän ammattikorkeakoulussa kehitettyä Palvelumuotoilun työkalupakkia. Opaskirja toteutettiin kahdessa vaiheessa. Ensimmäisessä vaiheessa tuotettiin versio Rinkelin päiväkodille, toisessa vaiheessa kehitettiin yleinen versio jaeltavaksi muihin Espoon varhaiskasvatuksen yksiköihin. Opaskirjan sovellusalustaksi valittiin ensin Book Creator, joka sittemmin vaihdettiin kapasiteettisyistä Adoben InDesigniin. Päiväkoti Rinkelin versio valmistui elokuussa 2016, jolloin myös yleisen version työstäminen alkoi.

Työryhmän saama palaute opaskirjasta oli positiivista ja idea vastaanotettiin kentällä innostuneesti. Palautteen perusteella vahvistui, että tämän kaltaista maahanmuuttajille suunniteltua materiaalia tarvitaan kotouttamisen tueksi. Opaskirjan vahvuuksiksi nähtiin, että se on tarkasti suunnattu tietylle kohderyhmälle, ja että se voidaan jaella Internetin kautta. Myös käytetyn teknologian joustavuus ja helppokäyttöisyys nähtiin tärkeänä erityisesti tuotteen jatkokehittämisen sekä eri kieliversioiden toteuttamisen kannalta.

The aim of this thesis was to develop a digital guide and booklet for immigrating families with small children to help the start in day care. The working life partner for the thesis was the City of Espoo which also assigned resources to support project. The need for the guide emerged from the constantly growing number of non-Finnish speaking children in the early childhood education, especially in the capital region. In Espoo this number varied regionally and per operating unit, reaching the level of 20 % on average at the time of this project.

Language barriers alongside with cultural differences complicate social integration. The purpose of the digital guide and booklet was to provide immigrating families with information about the daily activities and operating principles of the Finnish day care units. Another goal was to ease the workload of the personnel of the units by providing a self-help tool for the families with which they could familiarize themselves with the activities in day care.

The product creation process was based on a Service Design process toolkit developed at the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences. The project was divided into two main stages. First a version for the Rinkeli kindergarten was created, and then a generic version was made for further distribution to the rest of the Espoo day care units. Initially, Book Creator was chosen as the technical platform but later it was replaced by Adobe InDesign for capacity reasons. The Rinkeli version was completed and the second stage was initiated in August 2016.

The digital guide and booklet was received well in the field and the feedback to the team was positive and even excited. It was concluded that there is a true need for material like this to support the social integration of immigrating families. The strengths of the digital guide and booklet were its focus on a specific target audience, and the possibility of easy distribution over the Internet. Also, the flexibility of the chosen technology and its ease-of-use were considered important especially from the viewpoint of the further development and making versions in other languages.
