Hiphop-musiikin tuottamisen estetiikka : Leo Luxxxus : LXXXIV LP ja Chydeone x Leo Luxxxus : FORCE100 LP

Abstract

Opinnäytetyö tarkasteli hiphop-musiikkia kronologisesti kyseisen elektronisen musiikin genren syntyajoista aina nykypäivään, erityisesti musiikin tuottamisen näkökulmasta. Tavoitteena oli kuvata kokonaisvaltaisesti hiphop-musiikin estetiikkaa, historiaa ja kehitystä tuotantoprosessin kautta. Koettiin tärkeäksi ottaa tarkasteluun myös hiphop-musiikin kannalta olennaisimmat tuotantovälineet ja studiolaitteet.

Läpi käytiin genren huomionarvoisimmat ja uraauurtavimmat tuottajat. Perehdyttiin hiphop-musiikin kehittymiseen ja fuusioitumiseen kolmen vuosikymmenen aikana. Lisäksi käsiteltiin sitä, miten tuotantolaitteisto on kehittynyt ja osaltaan vaikuttanut genren soundin kehitykseen.

Mediaosana toimivat Leo Luxxxus -taiteilijanimen alla julkaistut kaksi LP-levyä, joiden julkaisijoina toimivat hollantilainen Groove College, sekä suomalainen Monsp -levy-yhtiö. Pitkäsoittoja vertailtiin opinnäytetyön aiheeseen. Kerrottiin niiden tuotantoprosessista, josta esimerkkeinä toimivat liitteiksi valikoidut kappaleet. Hiphop-musiikin ja sen lähigenrejen tuottamista peilattiin henkilökohtaiseen tuotantoprosessiin. Pohdittiin laite- ja soundivalintoja. Miksi päädyttiin juuri tiettyyn soundiin tietyssä kontekstissa, saavuttaen tyylillisesti jotain tiettyä? Estetiikka oli tärkeä faktori työssä.

This Bachelor's thesis studied the musical production of hip hop music and its aesthetics. The thesis examined this particular genre of electronic music chronologically – from the birthplace of hip hop all the way to this day. The focus remained on the music production. The goal was to describe profoundly the aesthetics, history and the development of hip hop, through personal productions. It was important to go through the most essential producers and producing equipment of hip hop music.

The thesis went through the most groundbreaking producers and beat makers of the genre. It also examined the progress and fusion of the hip hop music in the three decades of its existence. Additionally, it viewed the development of production equipment, which has influenced the progression of hip hop sound throughout the years.

The media part was built around two recent albums by the musical alter ego Leo Luxxxus, released by the Dutch label Groove College and the Finnish major label MONSP. These records were compared to the subject of the thesis. The thesis described the working process of these albums and used a couple of tracks from both albums as a reference. The thesis assimilated hip hop and black rhythm music genres in general to the personal working process, and pondered on the choices of equipment and sound, e.g. why a certain type of sound was used in a particular context to reach something style-wise. Aesthetics was a major factor in the work.
