Ihmisten toiminta nopeasti etenevissä katastrofeissa merellä

Abstract

Opinnäytetyön aiheena on ihmisten toiminta nopeasti etenevissä katastrofeissa merellä. Työssäni tarkastelen, minkälaisia reaktioita nopeasti etenevät katastrofit ihmisissä aiheuttavat sekä miten nämä reaktiot vaikuttavat heidän toimintaansa ja tätä kautta heidän pelastautumismahdollisuuksiinsa näistä katastrofeista. Työn alkuosassa tarkastelen yleisesti alan asiantuntijoiden tekstejä ja heidän käsityksiään siitä, mitä ihmisessä tavallisesti tapahtuu hänen kohdatessaan suuren katastrofin, joka vaikuttaa tuhoisasti hänen silloiseen ympäristöönsä. Tämä tarkastelu perustuu siis lähinnä katastrofipsykologiaan sekä katastrofipsykologiasta löytyviin historiallisiin esimerkkeihin ihmisiä kohdanneista erilaisista katastrofeista. Katastrofipsykologian teoriaosuuden jälkeen käyn huolellisesti läpi tapahtumat huhtikuun 28. päivän yönä vuonna 1994, jolloin MV Estoniaa kohtasi järkyttävä katastrofi Itämerellä. Katastrofi vaati kaiken kaikkiaan 852 ihmisen hengen. Työssäni perehdyn MV Estonian osalta vain siihen, miten aluksella olleet ihmiset reagoivat ja mitä he tekivät tämän äärimmäisen hädän hetkellä. Työni peruslähteenä käytän Viron, Suomen ja Ruotsin hallitusten asettaman kansainvälisen tutkintakomission laatimaa loppuraporttia MV Estonian katastrofista. Lopulta tarkastelen vielä katastrofipsykologian teorioiden paikkansapitävyyttä Estonian tapauksessa. Mielenkiintoni kohteena on siis lopultakin juuri se, miten sekä laivalla olevat maallikkomatkustajat että alan ammattimerenkulkijat toimivat silloin, kun haveri tapahtuu niin yllättäen ja etenee niin suurella nopeudella, että mitkään tavanomaiset ja opetellut pelastautumiskäytännöt eivät tule kysymykseen.

The subject of this thesis was human actions in fast evolving catastrophes at sea. In my work I want to study what kind of reactions fast evolving catastrophes cause in people and how these reactions affect their actions and their ability to save themselves from these catastrophes. At the beginning part of the work I study generally texts of specialist's in this area. I study their opinion's of what normally happens in a person who encounters a great catastrophe which destructively affects his or her surroundings. This examination bases primarily on catastrophe psychology and on examples found in the history of catastrophe psychology of how these different catastrophes have affected human actions. After the theory part of catastrophe psychology I carefully go through the events from the night of April 28th 1994. This was the night when a devastating accident happened to MV Estonia on Baltic Sea, causing the death of 852 persons onboard. At my study in the part of the MV Estonia I get oriented only in the reactions and actions of those in the midst of this ultimate distress. As the basic source of my work I use The final report of The Joint Accident Investigation Commission of Estonia, Finland and Sweden on the capsizing of the Ro-Ro passenger vessel MV Estonia. At the end I also examine how do the theories of catastrophe psychology serve their purpose in the case of MV Estonia. Fundamentally my goal is to find out how do lay passengers and professional seamen act when an accident happens so unexpectedly and evolves with such a speed, that none of the traditional and learnt survival techniques do not come to question.
