Kuluma - Melankolia tilassa : Kuluma - valokuvaprojekti

Abstract

Opinnäytetyöni lähtökohtana oli aiemmin toteuttamani valokuvaprojekti ”Kuluma”, joka käsittelee kuluvan ihmisen teemaa vertautuen rakennetun ympäristön kulumiseen ja rapistumiseen. Tutkin, voiko ihmisen psykofyysistä tilaa esittää kuvassa, jossa itse ihminen ei esiinny. Pohdin tilan melankoliaa. Analysoin ja tulkitsen kuvia pyrkien objektiivisuuteen sekä vertailen ottamiani kuvia ja niiden tulkintaa toisten taiteilijoiden kuviin.

Kuvasarjaan kuului 30 mustavalkokuvaa, joista 27 muodostavat tämän tutkimuksen kuvaston. Olen ryhmitellyt kuvat tässä tutkimuksessa teemallisen yhteenkuuluvuuden perusteella pienemmiksi sarjoiksi, joita käsittelen kokonaisuuksina.

Tulkinnan ongelmakohtana näyttäytyi objektiivisuus omien töiden suhteen. Tulkinnan painopisteeseen vaikuttivat omat tunteet ja projektin henkilökohtainen luonne. Toisen ottaman kuvan kanssa tulkinnan painopiste asettui väistämättä toisin, eikä henkilökohtaista tulkinnan värittämistä tapahtunut niin helposti. Viitekehyksen vaikutus tulkintaan on myös ilmeinen.

Tutkimuksen johtopäätöksenä koen, että ihmisen tilaa on mahdollista kuvata, kuvaamatta itse ihmistä. Tilan herättämät tunteet, kuvan rakenne ja symboliikka ohjaavat tulkintaa ulottumaan myös henkilön tilaan ja tunteisiin.

The starting point of my thesis work was a project of photography “Decay”, Kuluma, which I formerly executed. This project is concerned with the theme of a mentally and physically decaying human being in comparison to the decaying of the built environment. I examined if the psychophysical state of a person could be presented in a picture, when the person himself is not present. Additionally, I pondered the melancholy of space and its nature. I analyzed and interpreted pictures, aiming to be objective, and compared my pictures and interpretations to the works of other artists.

There were 30 pictures in the series, and 27 of them form the imagery of this study. I grouped those pictures into smaller sequences based on their cohesiveness of the theme, and then processed the groups as a whole.

Problematic with the interpretation seemed to be objectivity when interpreting my own work. The focus of the interpretation was impacted by personal feelings and the very intimate nature of the project. The situation was different with the pictures that others had taken and objectivity was much easier to achieve. The framework also affected interpretation a great deal.

As a conclusion of the study, I am sure that it is possible to represent the state of a person in a picture, without taking a picture of the person himself. The emotions that come to the fore from the picture, as well as its construction and symbolism, will guide the interpretation to the point where reaching the state of the person and his emotions is possible.
