Kasvatusta ja elämyksiä kirjastosta : Elokuvakasvatus yleisissä kirjastoissa

Abstract

Tämä opinnäytetyö käsittelee yleisten kirjastojen mahdollisuuksia toimia elokuvakasvattajina. Työ on toiminnallinen ja käyttää lähestymistapanaan kartoitusta, jolla elokuvakasvatuksen nykyinen tila kirjastoissa on pyritty selvittämään. Työn toiminnallisen osuuden tarkoituksena on esittää kirjastoille sopivia elokuvakasvatuksen toimintamuotoja, joilla ne voisivat toimintaansa kehittää. Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on, että mikä tahansa yleinen kirjasto voisi käyttää sitä apuvälineenään elokuvakasvatuksessa. Työn toimeksiantajana toimii Oulun ammattikorkeakoulu ja sen on ohjannut tutkintovastaava Jorma Niemitalo.

Työn viitekehyksessä tarkastellaan elokuvan vaikuttavuutta mediana, määritellään elokuvanlukutaito ja elokuvakasvatus, käsitellään elokuvakasvatuksen keinoja sekä pohditaan sen roolia osana laajempaa mediakasvatusta. Lisäksi selvitetään mediakasvatuksen toteutumista kirjastoissa. Viitekehyksen tavoitteena on todentaa elokuvan vaikuttavuus ja elokuvakasvatuksen välttämättömyys sekä löytää perusteet kirjastoissa tehtävälle elokuvakasvatukselle ja sen tärkeydelle.

Elokuva on yli satavuotias taidemuoto sekä vaikuttava media, joka muokkaa maailmankuvaamme. Vaikuttavuutensa vuoksi elokuvaa on syytä tarkastella kriittisesti varsinkin lasten ja nuorten parissa, jotka ovat erityisen herkkiä sen välittämille sisällöille. Elokuvanlukutaito mahdollistaa elokuvan rakenteellisen ja sisällöllisen tarkastelun ja tulkinnan. Se kehittyy katsomalla elokuvia mutta myös tekemällä niitä itse. Elokuvakasvatus, joka on osa laajempaa mediakasvatusta, edistää tätä lukutaitoa.

Vaikka kirjastot toimivat mediakasvattajina, elokuvakasvatusta ei välttämättä eritellä laajemmasta mediakasvatuksesta tai sitä ei käsitellä ollenkaan. Jos elokuvakasvatusta harjoitetaankin, vaikuttaa se enemmän hankeluontoiselta kuin säännölliseltä toiminnalta. Mediakasvatuksen kuten elokuvakasvatuksenkin toteutumiselle voi kirjastoissa olla monia esteitä, kuten resurssien vähyys tai tarvittavan osaamisen puute. Opinnäytetyön toiminnallinen osuus pyrkii ideoimaan kirjastoille sopivia elokuvakasvatuksen toimintamuotoja sekä etsimään ratkaisuja elokuvakasvatuksen toteutumista rajoittaviin tekijöihin. Keskeisimpinä elokuvakasvatuksen toimintamuotoina opinnäytetyö esittelee elokuvakerhon ja elokuvatyöpajan.

Mahdollisia jatkotoimenpiteitä ovat esitettyjen toimintamuotojen testaaminen käytännössä sekä kirjaston muille kohderyhmille, kuten senioreille, kehitysvammaisille tai maahanmuuttajille suunnatun elokuvakasvatuksen mahdollisuuksien selvittäminen.

This thesis discusses the possibility of the public libraries functioning as film educators. The thesis is practice-based and uses survey as an approach, by which it strives to examine the present state of film education. The purpose of the practical-based part of the thesis is to show to the libraries the suitable forms of film education in order improve their working. The goal of the thesis is to function as a tool of film education to any public library. The client of the thesis is Oulu University of Applied Sciences and the director the principal lecturer Jorma Niemitalo.

In the framework of the thesis the effectiveness of the film as a media is being examined, the film literacy and film education defined and the means of the film education and its role as a part of the vaster media education covered and pondered. In addition, the fruition of the media education in libraries is investigated. The aim of the framework is to verify the effectiveness of the film and the necessity of the film education and to lay the foundations of the film education and its essentialness in the public libraries.

The film is an art form tracing back over 100 years. It is an influential media that shapes our world view. Due to its effectiveness, there’s a reason to view the film critically, especially among the children and the youth who are sensitive to the contents passed on by it. The film literacy enables the analysis and the interpretation of the structure and the content of the film. Watching movies and taking part of the movie making process develops the film literacy. This literacy is advanced by the film education as a part of the vaster media education.

Although the public libraries function as media educators, the film education is not necessarily made separate from the vaster media education or is totally neglected. The possible film education seems more like project oriented than regular action. There may be many obstacles in the way of media as well as film education coming true in libraries, such as the lack of resources or required skills. The practice-based part of the thesis attempts to provide ideas, suitable for libraries to use as forms of activity in film education. It also tries to find solutions to issues restricting the fruition of the film education. The thesis presents the film clubs and workshops as the central forms of activity with regard to film education.

Feasible follow-ups are the testing of the proposed forms of activity in practice and examining the opportunities of the film education in libraries targeted for other people groups, such as senior citizens, disabled and immigrants.
