Ulkomailla toteutettavan dokumenttielokuvan esituotannon haasteet : UMODZI-verkoston vaihto Sambiassa

Abstract

CIMO:n North-South-South -ohjelma (NSS) ja UMODZI-verkosto tukivat suoma-laisten ja kehitysmaiden korkeakoulujen välisiä yhteistyöhankkeita. Tämän kautta minut ja kuusi muuta suomalaista kulttuurialan opiskelijaa lähetettiin kolmeksi kuukaudeksi Sambiaan keväällä 2015. Viisi meistä suoritti siellä työharjoitteluaan ja kaksi teki seurantadokumenttia työharjoitteluissa olleista. Tein dokumenttia yhdessä työparini Heini-Leena Antolan kanssa. Tuotannolla oli hyvin tiukka aikataulu, eivätkä sen kaikki osa-alueet olleet tiedossa ennen matkaa, ja suuri osa asioista selvisikin meille vasta Sambiassa. Opinnäytetyönämme tekemän dokumenttielokuvan Maailmankuvaa muuttamassa lisäksi teimme NSS-ohjelmalle lyhyemmän, eli noin 10 minuutin esittelyvideon, jota he käyttivät oman työnsä raportointiin 2015. Se esitettiin UMODZI-verkoston päätösseminaarissa, jossa keskusteltiin ohjelman onnistumisesta, opituista asioista ja sen vaikutuksesta. Vieraan kulttuurin kohtaaminen, ihmisenä kasvaminen ja oman tietotaidon kartut-taminen ovat olleet tämän pitkän projektin suurin oppi, niin dokumentissa esiintyville opiskelijoille kuin meille dokumenttia tehneille. Tämän dokumentin tavoitteena on välittää tietoa kulttuurieroista ja niiden sisäistämisestä. Kokemattomana tuottajana esituotanto oli erityisen vaativa ajan ja informaation puutteiden vuoksi. Epänormaali ja vajaa esituotanto tarkoitti minulle myös sitä, että jouduin matkan aikana suunnittelemaan dokumenttiamme, jotta saisimme aikaan eheän ja kelvollisen dokumentin. Jouduin vielä palattuamme Suomeenkin suunnittelemaan asioita uudelleen editoinnin aikana. Tämä kirjallinen osuus lopputyöstäni käsittelee ulkomailla toteutettavan dokumenttielokuvan esituotannon työstämistä, kun itse tuotantoa ei pysty kokonaisuudessaan etukäteen hahmottamaan.

CIMO's North-South-South program (NSS) and the UMODZI Network supported co-operation projects between Finland and developing countries. For this purpose, I and six other Finnish cultural students were sent to Zambia for three months in the spring of 2015. Five of us completed their internships, and two of us made a documentary film about the internships. I made a documentary film with my project partner, Heini-Leena Antola. The documentary film was made with a very tight schedule, and not all the parts of the production were known before the trip. Most of the details were not found out until we arrived in our destination country, Zam-bia. In addition to our documentary film, Maailmankuvaa muuttamassa, we made a shorter, approximately 10-minute presentation video for the NSS program, which they used to report on their own work in 2015. It was presented at the UMODZI final seminar to discuss the success of the program, the lessons learned, and its impact on the larger picture. Meeting a foreign culture, growing as a human being and expanding one’s own know-how were the focal points of this long project, both for the students filmed for the documentary film and for us, the authors of the documentary. The purpose of this document is to convey information about cultural differences and their internal-ization. As an unexperienced producer, the pre-production was particularly demanding due to a lack of time and missing information. The abnormal and insufficient pre-production also meant that I had to plan our documentary film during our trip to create a good and worthwhile documentary film. After coming back to Finland, I had to plan things again during editing. This thesis is about the pre-production of a documentary filmed abroad, when the details of the production are unclear beforehand.
