Vapaaehtoistyöntekijöiden kokemuksia Kan ry:n päihdekuntoutustyössä

Abstract

Opinnäytetyö käsittelee vapaaehtoistyöntekijöiden kokemuksia toiminnastaan Kristillisessä alkoholisti- ja narkomaanityön yhdistyksessä (Kan ry:ssä). Opinnäytetyön tavoite oli kuulla vapaaehtoistyöntekijöitä. Työn keskeisin tarkoitus oli saada kokemuspohjaista tutkimustietoa vapaaehtoistyöntekijöiltä itseltään kokemuksistaan vapaaehtoistoiminnan suhteen. Työllä haettiin vastausta seuraaviin tutkimuskysymyksiin: Miten henkilöt ovat tulleet mukaan Kan ry:n vapaaehtoistoimintaan? Millaisena vapaaehtoistyöntekijät kokevat oman työnsä merkityksen Kan ry:ssä? Millä tavoin toimintaa voitaisiin kehittää vapaaehtoistyöntekijöiden näkökulmasta?

Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin kvalitatiivista tutkimusmenetelmää hyödyntäen. Aineistonkeruumenetelmänä oli puolistrukturoitu teemahaastattelu. Haastattelut toteutettiin puhelimitse. Puhelut nauhoitettiin ja tallenteet tuhottiin litteroinnin jälkeen, jotta haastateltujen anonymiteetti säilyisi. Tekstimuotoon litteroitu aineisto analysoitiin aineistolähtöistä sisällönanalyysia käyttäen. Opinnäytetyön aineistonkeruu toteutettiin alkukeväästä 2017. Analyysi ja raportointi sen sijaan ajoittuivat loppukevääseen.

Opinnäytetyön tulokset koostuivat haastatteluihin osallistuneiden vapaaehtoistyöntekijöiden antamista vastauksista. Aineistolähtöisen sisällönanalyysin jälkeen keskeisiksi teemoiksi nousivat vertaisuus sekä toiminnan hengelliset arvot. Lisäksi esiin nousivat auttamisen halu ja lähimmäisyys. Nämä tulivat esiin sekä toimintaan lähtemisestä puhuttaessa että merkitysten kokemista käsiteltäessä. Vapaaehtoistyön kehittämisen kannalta tärkeänä nähtiin toiminnan yhtenäisyys ja uusien vapaaehtoisten rekrytointi.

Yhdistyksessä tapahtuva vapaaehtoistyö rakentuu vankasti kristillisten arvojen ja hengellisyyden varaan. Vapaaehtoistyöntekijät kokivat toimintansa hyvin vastavuoroiseksi, merkitykselliseksi ja itselle antoisaksi. Osa henkilöistä toimi vapaaehtoisena vertaisuudesta kumpuavan auttamishalun vuoksi. Opinnäytetyö on ainutkertainen kuvaus yhden kristillisen päihdekuntoutustyötä tekevän yhdistyksen vapaaehtoistoiminnasta. Kaikki vastaajat toimivat Jyväskylässä sijaitsevassa toimintayksikössä. Opinnäytetyö antaa siis syväluotaavaa tietoa nimenomaisen toimintayksikön ja yhdistyksen vapaaehtoistoiminnasta. Näin ollen kokemukset eivät ole yleistettävissä, mutta voivat soveltua osittain myös muihin päihdehuollon vapaaehtoistyön tehtäviin. Jatkossa vapaaehtoistyötä voitaisiin tutkia vaikkapa kuntoutujien näkökulmasta. Mielenkiintoinen kysymys voisi olla se, miten vapaaehtoistoiminta on auttanut kuntoutujaa hänen kuntoutumisprosessissaan.

The thesis deals with the experiences that volunteers had with their activities in the Christian Care for alcohol and drug abusers Association (Kan ry). The aim of the thesis work was to consult the volunteers. The main purpose of the thesis was to gain experience-based research information from the volunteers about their experiences with voluntary work. The research questions of the thesis were: How have people joined the voluntary work in Kan? How do volunteers feel the importance of their own work in Kan? How could voluntary work be developed from the perspective of volunteers?

The thesis was a qualitative study. The research material was collected by semi-structured interviews. The interviews were conducted over the phone. The calls were saved, but after the reproduction they were deleted. This was done for the interviewees to remain anonymous. The transcribed material was analyzed by using qualitative content analysis. The material collection of the thesis was carried out in the early spring of 2017. The analysis and reporting were completed later that spring.

The results of the thesis consisted of answers from the volunteers who participated in the interviews. After the content analysis, the material especially revealed the significance of peer support and the spiritual values. In addition, other things were found in the material, such as the desire to help and the neighborliness. These concepts came to be the cause of the start of voluntary work and as the basis for continuation. The unity of activities and the recruitment of new volunteers were important aspects in the development of volunteering.

Based on the conclusions, voluntary work in the association is firmly based on Christian values and spirituality. Volunteers felt that their work was very reciprocal, meaningful, and rewarding. Some of them were volunteers because they had previously used intoxicants themselves. That is why they now wanted to help others out of addiction. The thesis is a unique description of the voluntary work of a single Christian association which works with post-drug rehabilitation. All respondents work in a unit in Jyväskylä. The thesis provides a comprehensive knowledge of the volunteer activity of the operating unit and the association. Consequently, experiences are not generalizable, but could also be partially adapted to the other duties of volunteering in drug abuse care. In the future, volunteering could be explored, for example, from the client's point of view. A good question could be, for example, how volunteering has helped the customer in the rehabilitation process.
