Ikääntymisen tuomat haasteet skitsofreniapotilaan hoitotyössä

Abstract

Opinnäytetyössämme käsittelimme skitsofreniaa ja sitä, mitä haasteita ikääntyminen tuo skitsofreniapotilaan hoitotyöhön. Käsittelimme sairautta siltä kannalta, että se on ollut ikääntyneellä nuoruudesta lähtien, jätimme siis pois vanhuusiässä puhkeavan skitsofrenian. Tavoitteenamme oli selvittää, miten hoitohenkilökunta kokee ikääntyneen skitsofreniapotilaan hoitotyön. Tarkoituksenamme oli tuoda esille uusia näkökulmia ikääntyneiden skitsofreniapotilaiden hoidon haasteista sekä keinoja vastata näihin haasteisiin hoitotyön kannalta.

Toteutimme opinnäytetyömme tehden selvityksen käyttäen kvalitatiivisen tutkimuksen keinoja. Tutkimuskymyksenä meillä oli: ”Mitä haasteita skitsofreniapotilaan ikääntyminen tuo hoitotyöhön ja miten näihin haasteisiin vastataan hoitotyössä?”. Haastattelimme ikääntyneiden skitsofreniapotilaiden kanssa työskentelevää henkilökuntaa. Haastattelutyyppinä käytimme yksilöhaastattelua, johon olimme antaneet valmiiksi teemat. Toimeksiantajan pyynnöstä emme mainitse tuotoksessamme yksikön nimeä.

Haastatteluissa tuli esille paljon samoja asioita, joihin olimme kohdanneet jo teoriatietoa etsiessä. Suurimmiksi haasteiksi hoitohenkilökunta koki ikääntyneillä skitsofreniapotilailla lääkehoidon, somaattiset sairaudet, perushoidon sekä tukiverkoston puutteen. Lisäksi muun hoitohenkilökunnan ennakkoluulot nousivat suuresti esille. Hoitotyön keinoina ikääntynyttä skitsofreniapotilasta hoidettaessa hoitohenkilökunta käytti luottamuksellista hoitosuhdetta, keskustelua ja motivointia, päivärytmin luomista sekä nopeaa puuttumista voinnin muutoksiin.

In our Bachelor’s Thesis, we are processing schizophrenia and what the challenges aging causes in the treatment of the disease. We are viewing the disease from the point of view of the disease having been diagnosed from an early age. The focus of the thesis was delimited to late onset schizophrenia. The target was to solve how health care workers experience nursing of elderly schizophrenic patients. The goal was to bring new perspectives on the challenges of elderly schizophrenic patients and ways to answer these challenges.

The thesis was conducted as a qualitative study. The research question was “What challenges does the aging of the schizophrenic patient bring to nursing and how to respond to these challenges in nursing?”. People working with with elderly schizophrenic patients were interviewed. The interview type was individual theme interview.To make the interviewees unrecognizable, it has been agreed that the name of the commissioning unit will not be mentioned.

The findings of the interview are in line with other research done in the field. The nursing staff felt that the biggest challenges were the elderly schizophrenic patient’s medication, somatic illness, basic care and lack of support network. In addition, the prejudices of other nursing staff were mentioned often. As nursing tools for treating elderly schizophrenic patients, the staff used confidential treatment relationship, discussion and motivation, creating daytime rhythm and quick intervention with changes of the health.
