Under sex veckor gjordes 38 observationer. Dementia is becoming more and more common in Finland. Music can be used to help the elderly that experience the symptoms that come with dementia, e.g. depression, anxiety or restlessness. Taikofon FeelSound Player is a relatively new innovation that wants to make music an experience that can be felt with the whole body. The Taikofon FeelSound Player is portable, plays music from any electronical apparatus with BlueTooth and can be used in various different ways depending on the client.
This study wants to see, if the Taikofon FeelSound Player can help the elderly with dementia that live in a group home in the metropolitan area. This study wants to see if the Taikofon FeelSound Player can affect the elderly client’s behavior. Furthermore, this study wants to see if there is any connection between how long the Taikofon FeelSound Player is used and what the effect on the client’s behavior is.
The study is done as an observational study over a period of six (6) weeks. The staff in the group home will observe the clients behavior before and after the session. They will also note how long the Taikofon FeelSound Player was used.
The thesis is based on the theory of sociocultural inspiration. Earlier studies show that music can affect the elderly patient with dementia in a positive way. Some studies mean that this positive effect can be explained with the break in the client’s everyday life or the feel-ing of community.
During the six (6) week period of time 38 observations were made. The result of the study is that the Taikofon FeelSound Player has a positive effect on the client’s behavior. Additionally, the study shows that a longer time of listening has a more positive effect.
