Patients' perceptions of the nurse patient relationship in postoperative care

Abstract

Over the decades, there has been an increasing interest in finding out patient's perspectives on the health care service delivery, based on their experiences as the fundamental concepts that determines how well the healthcare systems respond to patients' individual health care needs and preferences. Health policies around the world regard patient centered care as a focal point expecting the health professionals to develop and adopt more holistic approaches of care that rightly address patients' needs and expectations. In surgical nursing, few studies have been carried out to show the association of patients' views on their interrelationship with the nurses and the perception they have on satisfaction levels of care during the postoperative period. The aim of the study was to discuss factors affecting therapeutic nurse–patient relationship, analyze the patients’ perceptions of their nursing care during the postoperative period, highlight some characteristics of both parties and finding out strategies of the relationship improvements. The study was conducted as a Literature review. Data collected from Cinahl, Academic search elite, PubMed and Google search. A relational content analysis was used in the analysis of data. The main category of discussion were the nurse-patient interactive factors and the institutional factors whose results indicated further studies to be carried out on ways of improving the relation in many places of the world
