TUKIHENKILÖIDEN KOKEMUKSIA TUETTAVAN KOHTAAMISESTA SAATTOHOIDON VAPAAEHTOISTOIMINNASSA

Abstract

Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli tutkia Pohjois-Suomen Syöpäyhdistyksen saattohoidon vapaaehtoisten tukihenkilöiden kohtaamisia tuettavien kanssa. Tavoitteena oli saada tietoa tukihenkilön ja tuettavan kohtaamisesta sekä tukihenkilökoulutuksen hyödyistä ja kehittämismahdollisuuksista kohtaamiseen liittyen. Koulutuksen järjestävät tahot voivat hyödyntää tuloksia kouluttaessaan uusia saattohoidon vapaaehtoisia tukihenkilöitä.

Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena. Aineisto kerättiin Pohjois-Suomen Syöpäyhdistyksen vapaaehtoisilta tukihenkilöiltä puolistrukturoidulla lomakekyselyllä. Lomakekysely lähetettiin 15 vapaaehtoiselle tukihenkilölle, joista kahdeksan vastasi kyselyyn. Vastaukset analysoitiin käyttämällä aineistolähtöistä aineistonanalyysiä.

Tuloksista ilmeni, että tuettavan ja tukihenkilön kohtaaminen sisältää tuettavan ehdoilla etenevää vuorovaikutusta. Kohtaamiset voimaannuttavat tukihenkilöä ja merkitsevät tuettavalle paljon. Saattohoidon tukihenkilökoulutus on lähtökohta toiminnalle ja sen kohtaamiseen liittyvään sisältöön oltiin pääsääntöisesti tyytyväisiä. Kehittämisehdotuksena esille nousivat omaisen kohtaaminen, sekä tuettavien kohtaamiseen liittyvien tunteiden käsittely. Jatkotutkimusehdotuksena on tutkia tuettavan läheisen ja tukihenkilön kohtaamista.

The purpose of this thesis was to study the encountering of the support persons and the patients during the terminal care process at the Cancer Society of Northern Finland. The aim was to gain knowledge from that process and, also to find pros and cons in the education of the support persons when it comes to meeting a patient. The organisations who educate support persons can gain knowledge from this and use the information when they educate new volunteers for the supporting role.

The thesis was done as a qualitative research study. The material was gathered from the voluntary workers in Cancer Society of Northern Finland by doing a questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent to 15 voluntary workers and 8 of them responded. The answers were analysed by using material-based substance analysis.

Based on the results it can be concluded that the interaction between the support person and the patient proceeds on the terms of the patient. The encounters also give strength to both and mean a lot to the patient. The education of the support persons is the basis for these activities and the results also showed that the respondents were mainly satisfied with the knowledge they had received. The meeting of relatives and how to handle the emotions related to the meetings were the main points that need the most development. Hence, the meeting between a support person and a relative of a terminal patient could be studied in the future.
