Pientaloalueen kompostoinnin yleisyyden selvittäminen ja kompostointineuvonnan kehittäminen

Abstract

CIRCWASTE - Kohti kiertotaloutta -hankkeella edistetään kiertotaloutta Suomessa ja hanke saa rahoitusta EU:n LIFE-ohjelmasta. Hankkeen osahanke Luuppi sisältää toimenpiteitä, joita toteutetaan Porin seudulla. Tämä opinnäytetyö on tehty osana Luuppi-osahanketta ja opinnäytetyön tilaajana on Porin kaupunki. Opinnäytetyössä käytiin läpi biojätteeseen liittyvää lainsäädäntöä ja tarkasteltiin kompostointia, jättäen tarkoituksella huomioimatta laitosmainen kompostointi. Opinnäytetyössä valitulle pientaloalueelle teetettiin kompostointikysely, jonka tarkoituksena oli selvittää kompostoinnin yleisyyttä tutkimusalueella. Tutkimusalueella tullaan tekemään seuraavan kahden vuoden aikana kompostointineuvontaa, jonka tarkoituksena on kompostoinnin yleistyminen 20 prosentilla. Opinnäytetyössä ideoitiin kompostointineuvontaa tutkimusalueelle kompostointikyselyn tulosten ja haastattelujen perusteella.

Kompostointikyselyn vastaajista suurin osa hävitti ruokajätteensä sekajätteen seassa, mutta tutkimusalueella on myös ruokajätettä kompostoivia kotitalouksia. Puutarhajätettä käsitellään kotitalouksissa selkeästi enemmän kuin ruokajätettä. Vaikka biojätettä hävitetään tutkimusalueella sekajätteen mukana, kompostointi nähdään ympäristöystävällisenä tapana käsitellä biojäte. Kompostoinnin aloittamisen suurimpana esteenä koetaan kompostorin kallis hankintahinta. Kompostointikysely innosti vastaajia, sillä yli 20 prosenttia vastaajista harkitsi aloittavansa kompostoinnin saman kevään aikana.

Kompostointikyselyllä saatiin tärkeää tietoa tutkimusalueen ihmisten ajatuksista ja kompostoinnin yleisyydestä. Kompostointineuvontaan ehdotettiin tapahtumia esimerkiksi puutarhatalkoot, rakenna komposti -kurssi ja vierailuja Porin Kompostointipuistoon. Kompostointikyselyssä kävi ilmi, että osissa kotitalouksissa ei synny tarpeeksi ruokajätettä kompostorin tarpeisiin. Opinnäytetyössä ehdotettiin yhteistä ruokajätteen kompostoria, jota Porin kaupunki ylläpitäisi ja asukkaat voisivat ostaa syntynyttä multaa sopivaan hintaan. Tutkimusalueen alakoulun kanssa tullaan tekemään yhteistyötä kompostointineuvonnan aikana ja opinnäyteyössä painotettiin, että yhteistyötä tulee tehdä myös tutkimusalueen päiväkodin kanssa.

CIRCWASTE – Towards Circular Economy -project contributes to circular economy in Finland and the project is funded by the European Union’s LIFE-program. A part of the project is the sub-project Luuppi which contains actions planned to be executed in the Pori region. This thesis has been produced as a part of Luuppi, and the employer is the City of Pori. Biowaste regulation and composting, excluding institutional com-posting, was examined. In preparation for this thesis, a composting survey was sent out to a selected small-house area to find out the commonness of composting in the survey area. During the next two years the residents of the survey area will be provided composting advice, the purpose of which is to increase the commonness of composting by 20 percent. Ideas for the composting advice were composed in this thesis according to the results of the survey and interviews.

Most of the recipients dispose of food waste with mixed waste. There are also some domestic households in the survey area who compost. Garden waste is handled more than food waste. Regardless of the lack of composting, it is seen as an environmental way to handle biowaste. The biggest obstacle for starting composting is the compost bin’s high acquisition price. Over 20 percent of recipients consider starting to compost this spring.

The composting survey provided important information of the ideas of people in the research area and on the commonness of composting. There were suggestions to hold events for composting guidance, such as a garden bee, build-a-compost course and visits to the Pori Composting Park. The composting survey showed that some house-holds do not produce enough waste to cater for the compost’s needs. In the thesis, acquiring a common community composter was proposed. The composter would be maintained by the City of Pori and residents could purchase the produced mulch at a suitable price. During the composting guidance, there will be coordinated collabora-tion with the primary school located in the research area. In the thesis, it was empha-sized that also the day care center should be included in the collaboration.
