Onko värillä väliä? : Haastattelututkimus lypsykarjarodun valinnasta

Abstract

Ayrshire on ollut pitkään Suomen yleisin lypsykarjarotu. Sen osuus maamme lypsylehmistä on kuitenkin vähentynyt jo pidemmän aikaa samalla kun holsteinin osuus on kasvanut. Pian ollaan siinä tilanteessa, että suurin osa Suomen lypsykarjasta on holsteinia.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli auttaa pitämään ayrshire-rotu elinvoimaisena Suomessa. Yhteisen jalostusohjelman myötä tavoite kosketti samalla kaikkia punaisia rotuja Pohjoismaissa. Tarkoituksena oli löytää syitä, joiden takia ayrshiresta luovutaan, tai syitä, jotka saavat ayrshiren säilymään karjassa. Tutkimuksen toimeksiantajana toimi Faba, joka on valtakunnallinen tuotantoeläinten jalostuspalveluita tarjoava yritys.

Tutkimus toteutettiin teemahaastattelumenetelmällä. Haastateltavat valittiin tuotosseurantaan kuuluvien, yli 100 lehmän tilojen joukosta koko Suomen alueelta. Haastateltavien valintaan vaikutti tilan koon lisäksi myös ayrshire-lehmien osuuden muutos karjassa vuodesta 2012 vuoteen 2017. Haastatteluja tehtiin 12.

Tutkimuksen tuloksista kävi ilmi, että yksi suurimmista syistä ayrshiren vähentämiseen karjassa on huono utarerakenne. Tämä näkyy myös tuotosseurannan tuloksissa, joiden mukaan ayrshireja on poistettu huonon utarerakenteen takia selkeästi holsteinia enemmän. Muita esiin nousseita syitä oli muun muassa ayrshiren alhaisempi maitotuotos ja sekakarjan ruokinnalliset haasteet. Tiloilla, joilla ayrshiren osuus ei ollut pienentynyt, rodun hyvistä ominaisuuksista nousi esiin erityisesti kestävyys.

Tutkimuksesta selvisi myös, että ayrshiren osuutta vähentäneet tilat aikovat pääasiassa vähentää rodun osuutta myös jatkossa. Sen sijaan tilat, joilla ayrshiren osuus ei ollut vähentynyt, aikoivat pääasiassa säilyttää rodun osuuden ennallaan tai jopa lisätä sitä. Tätä kannattaa tulevaisuudessa hyödyntää rodun markkinoinnin kohdentamisessa.

Ayrshire has been long time the most popular dairy cattle breed in Finland. However, the share of Ayrshire dairy cows in our country has decreased while that of Holstein has grown. Soon the most of Finnish dairy cattle will be Holstein.

The aim of the study was to help to keep Ayrshire breed popular in Finland. Finland has a common breeding program with Sweden and Denmark so the aim touched all red breeds in the Nordic Countries. The purpose of the study was to find out the reasons why the farms with Ayrshire are decreasing or why the some farms are still keeping Ayrshire in their cattle. The study was commissioned by Faba, which is the national breeding cooperative.

The study was conducted by using a focused interview. The interviewees were selected from the Finnish farms that are included in the milk recording system and have over 100 cows. The selection of interviewees was affected not only by the size of the farm but also by the change in the share of Ayrshire cows from 2012 to 2017. In total 12 interviews were made.

The results of the study showed that one of the main reasons for reducing Ayrshire is its poor udder structure. This is also reflected in milk recording results that show that the Ayrshire has been removed due to a poor udder structure far more than Holstein. Other reasons were for example lower milk yield and the challenges of feeding cattle that includes more than one breed. The good endurance of Ayrshire was emerged especially among the farms where the share of Ayrshire has not declined.

The study also found out that the share of Ayrshire will decline in the future on farms where it has declined recent years. The farms where the Ayrshire share had not declined were mainly planning to maintain or even increase the share of the breed. In the future this is worth of considering in targeting the marketing of the breed.
