When a somatic inhospital patient show signs of deterioration or when the nurses’ intui-tion says something is wrong, it can be helpful to use a guide or a tool as a complement to the nurses’ clinical knowledge to systematize the work. In this study I want to find out if the MEWS-scale is a good and useful tool in the care of a diagnosed or suspected sepsis and if the scale show negative changes in the septic patient’s condition. The theoretical reference frame of this study is patient safety and it is aiming to increase the patient safe-ty for inhospital, septic patients and find out if the general MEWS-scale is a useful scale in the care of sepsis. This study have two research questions, where the first question leads to the second: Is the MEWS-scale a useful scale in the care of a suspected or diag-nosed sepsis? What advantages does the use of the MEWS-scale have in the care of a suspected or diagnosed sepsis? This study is a literature review, where research has been collected through a systematic search. The 10 selected research articles have been ana-lyzed using a qualitative content analysis to get a result. The result was divided into three themes which were named patient safety, continuity and the nurses’ professional role. When the MEWS-scale is correctly used it increases the patient safety and the continuity in both the follow-up of the patient and in the nurses’ work when the work is systemized and made more efficient. The nurses’ professional skills are the base for the scale to be used correctly and use it purpose. Since the vital parameters used in the MEWS-scale are the same vital parameters you can see early changes in the condition of a septic patient, I could conclude that the scale is useful and is a good tool in the care of sepsis.
