Clinical laboratories are big consumers of carbon dioxide emissions and natural resources (Lopez, 2017). Their current need of energy, material and water resources are unsustainable. The usage of multiple poisonous chemicals needed for analyzing leads to dangerous wastes which is damaging nature and exposes the staff to increased risks of injuries.
The categories energy and water consumption, drainage and waste management as well as chemical usage within the clinical laboratory are processes within the laboratory which were considered significant high in usage of resources. The recommendations of the clinical laboratory were established through highlighting the common most unsustainable devices and working processes. Recommendations for sustainable alternatives follow the highlighted devices and working processes with the goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and usage of resources.
Through different small changes in equipment like freezer, autoclaves and microscope lightning, usage of energy and water resources can be minimized. Modifications in storage properties of DNA and RNA samples as well as changes in working processes with fume hoods can respectively save storage space and usage of indoor ventilation. Recycling materials and decreasing waste helps to reduce the size of the ecological footprint. A collection of environmental friendlier chemicals will result, when implemented, in less dangerous waste disposal as well as increase the safety of the working environment.
Because there are multiple impulses for sustainable development in laboratories within this bachelor´s thesis, the potential for sustainable development is huge. During compiling the environmental friendlier alternatives, attention was given to impulses that do not degrade patient analysis or the staff negatively. The final resolution in this thesis is that an implementation of sustainable development in the management plan can benefit not only the nature, but also the staff and the economy.
