Long Lake -kotistudio : Kotistudion rajoitteet

Abstract

Opinnäytetyössäni tutkin kotistudioon liittyviä rajoitteita ja minkälaisia positiivisia ja negatiivisia vaikutuksia näillä rajoitteilla on studiotyöskentelyssä. Vastapainona ja vertauskohteena pohdiskelen samojen rajoitteiden vaikutusta ammattistudioon.

Selvitin myös kotistudion historiallista kehityskaarta kotiäänityksien alkuajoilta nykypäivään ja pohdin, minkälaisia rajoitteita äänitysstudiossa on ylipäätään olemassa. Esittelen tarkemmin viittä tyypillisintä rajoitetta, joihin jokainen ammattimainen tai amatöörimainen äänittäjää on varmasti joskus törmännyt tai tulee ennen pitkään törmäämään.

Työssäni analysoin myös kahta omaa kotistudioprojektiani, joissa molemmissa olen itse ollut mukana sekä esittämässä musiikkia ja toiminut äänittäjänä ja miksaajana. Ensimmäinen kappale, "Oh Woman, You Took My Heart" on äänitetty kotini autotallissa, jonne kesällä 2018 rakensin väliaikaisen kotistudion. Toinen kappale, "Sen Vår", on äänitetty hyvin erikoisessa paikassa, Helsingin Kalliossa sijaitsevan Ihantola-talon ullakkotornissa, jonne myös rakensimme väliaikaisen studion. Kumpikin kappale edustaa hyvin erilaista musiikkityyliä, mutta molempien tekemiseen liittyi paljon rajoittavia tekijöitä, joista oli sekä hyötyä, että haittaa projekteissa.

This thesis is a research of the limitations of a home studio. The study discusses both the positive and negative impact of these limitations on the home studio environment. As a counterfeiter and a benchmark, I will also contemplate on the effects of the same limitations in the context of a professional studio.

In addition, this thesis explores the historical development of home recording from the early days to the present day, to demonstrate the limitations of a recording studio. I will also display the five most common limitations that any professional or amateur recording engineer will be likely to come across or come to terms with before long.

In my thesis, I will also analyze two of my own home recording projects. In both projects, I worked not only as a performer of the music but also as a sound engineer and mixing engineer. The first song, "Oh Woman, You Took My Heart" was recorded in my home garage, where I constructed a temporary home studio in the summer of 2018. The second track, "Sen Vår", was recorded in a very special place in the attic tower of the beautiful Ihantola building in the Kallio district, Helsinki, where we also built a temporary studio. Each song represents a completely different musical genre, but a shared feature to both projects was a large number of factors involved. Some of the factors proved beneficial, whereas some were counterproductive.
