Tutkimuskysymyksiin etsittiin tietoja eri sähköisillä tietokannoilla, kuten Medic, PubMed, Julkari.
Peer pressure which is also called group pressure consists of many factors. A young person's development influences the nature of the group pressure and factors within group influences the type of peer pressure.
The cognitive development of an adolescent is not advanced yet and therefore decision making is hard for the adolescent. In which case the effect of peer pressure has an increased impact. The outcomes of the peer pressure depending on the complex of peer pressure. In normal and positive peer group the adolescents can maintain and make the right decisions. On the contrary peer pressure could also cause risky behavior if the peer group is influencing negative behavior such as substance abuse, alcohol use and early sexual acts. Risky behavior clearly affects in the health of the adolescent and even marks early death. Individuals of the peer group such as friends are the reason why adolescents start the use of substances. Peer group has an effect to adolescent to use alcohol, tobacco and other substances.
The thesis was conducted as descriptive literature review. The aim of the thesis is to bring awareness about the peer pressure among youth and the positive and negative sides and its effect on the youth. The thesis brings up how it is important for the adolescent to belong in certain group and how it can affect the decision making. The results have shown how the protective and exposing factors affect peer pressure and its consequences. The results have been collected from different scientific databases: Medic, PubMed and Julkari. 9 studies were collected in the analysis of the results.
Abstinence of substances among the youth can be supported by solving the backround factors and therefore decrease the risky behavior. By then one could treat the backround factors and not just the addiction. By that one can give the right kind of support.
