Kustavilainen lipasto: Tutkimus, konservointi, restaurointi.

Abstract

Opinnäytetyön aiheena oli 1700-luvun lopun viilutetun kustavilaisen lipaston tutkimus, konservointi ja restaurointi. Lipasto kuuluu Hämeen museon kokoelmaa, nyk. Museo Milavida, joka on osa Tampereen museoita.

Lipaston tekijästä tai entisistä omistajuussuhteista ei ole varmaa tietoa. Tekijäksi epäiltiin tukholmalaista mestaripuuseppää, Jonas Hultsténia. Hänen muihin töihinsä perehdyttiin ja lisäksi haastateltiin konservaattoreita, jotka tuntevat ruotsalaiset tyylikalusteet. Lipaston materiaaleja analysoitiin, kuten puulajeja, messinkiosia ja intarsiakoristelun pigmentoituja vahatäyttöjä. Lopuksi lipastolle tehtiin arvoanalyysi, jonka myötä voitiin suositella mahdollisia jatkotoimenpiteitä ja lisätutkimuksia.

Lipastoa on aikoinaan selvästi restauroitu. Nykyinen pintakäsittely on tehty nitroselluloosalakalla, joka on suhteellisen nuori pintakäsittelymateriaali. Moderni lakkapinta lisäsi haasteita konservointitoimenpiteisiin, esimerkiksi lakkapinnan kirkastuksen kohdalla. Nitroselluloosalakan läsnäolo häiritsi muiden materiaalien analysointia, erityisesti FTIR-infrapunaspektroskopiatutkimusten osalta.

Lipastossa on messinkisiä koristeita, joista osaan oli muodostunut korroosiopintaa. Kaikki messinkiosat puhdistettiin, joitakin retusoitiin ja yhdestä puuttuvasta osasta tehtiin rekonstruktio sähkömuovaamalla. Aikaisempia viilupaikkauksia ei poistettu, mutta niiden sävyä paranneltiin. Marmoroitua puukantta on myös aikoinaan huomattavasti retusoitu. Kannen sävyjä analysoitiin ja joitakin vaurioita retusoitiin.

The subject of the thesis is a veneered Gustavian bureau from the end of the 18th century. The thesis focuses on research, conservation and restauration. The bureau belongs to the Häme museum’s collection, curr. Museum Milavida, which is part of the Tampere Museums.

There does not exist certain information about the bureau’s maker or about its prior owners. It is suspected that the bureau was made by Swedish master cabinetmaker, Jonas Hultstén. As part of the research; Hultstén’s other works were surveyed, and conservators whom are specialist with Swedish period furniture were interviewed. The bureau’s materials were analysed, such as, the wood pieces, the pigmented wax-fillings of the intarsia/marquetry, and the brass adornments. A value analysis was conducted for the bureau, in order to recommend additional possible follow-up research, restoration and conservation work.

The bureau has been restored heavily in the past. The current varnish of the bureau is cellulose nitrate, which is relatively modern material. The modern varnish made the conservation procedures more challenging, for example, the activating method for the lacquer was a complex task. The presence of cellulose nitrate disturbed the analysis of other materials, especially with FTIR-infraredspectroscopy.

The bureau has brass adornments, some of them had suffered corrosion. All of the brass parts were cleaned, some of them retouched afterwards, and one missing part was reconstructed with electrotyping method. The bureau’s existing veneer patches were not removed, but instead retouched. The wooden top is decorated with imitation painting, which has been retouched heavily in the past. Colors of the top were analysed, and some new retouchings was made.
