This thesis work was done in cooperation with the company Ab Wikrolux Oy. The task was to design and make a working prototype of a power supply. The task of the power supply is to supply light emitting diodes (LEDs) with power. The light emitting diodes are used as light source in emergency lighting and emergency exit signs. In both cases the light emitting diodes have to be illuminated during power failures. Therefore the power supply has to contain a backup system. During a power failure the power will be taken from power reserves, which in this case are batteries. When the power is back on, the batteries will be charged. The light emitting diodes have special characteristics that demand a special type of power supply. The reason for this will be explained in this thesis. Explanations of how the power supply works in a technical way will also be presented. Finally a few alternative solutions are given and the best one is chosen. The chosen alternative resulted in me building a complete prototype, which is working and well documented.
