Terävyysalueen käyttö elokuvassa

Abstract

Opinnäytetyöni kirjallinen osio käsittelee terävyysaluetta sekä tekniseltä, käytännölliseltä että kerronnalliselta kannalta. Tarkastelen millä keinoin terävyysalueeseen pystyy vaikuttamaan ja mitä teknisiä ratkaisuja on kehitetty sen kontrolloimiseen. Halusin tutkia mihin kaikkeen muuhunkin terävyysaluetta voi käyttää kuin luomaan kaunista kuvaa ja visuaalisia efektejä, johon olin aikaisemmin tottunut. Kapealla ja laajalla terävyysalueella pystyy kertomaan tarinasta ja sen henkiloista sekä tunnelmasta erilaisia asioita ja halusin perehtyä tarkemmin näihin tehokeinoihin.

Tutkin myös sitä, miten elokuvan historiassa erilaisten terävyysalueiden suosiminen on vaihdellut sekä trendien että myös tekniikan kehityksen myötä. Erilaiset keksinnöt ovat vuorotellen pakottaneet tietynlaiseen kuvaukseen tai antaneet mahdollisuuden kokeilla ja leikitellä terävyysalueella, itselläni taas on enemmän kokemusta nykyajan käytännöistä.

Lopuksi käyn läpi opinnäytteen teososaa lyhytelokuva Hypnosta ja sitä, miten siinä käytettiin hyödyksi nimenomaan kapeaa terävyysaluetta. Lähtökohta kapean terävyysalueen käytölle oli nimenomaan visuaalinen, mutta prosessissa sille löytyi myös muita käyttötarkoituksia ja se näin ollen tukee elokuvan tarinaa.

In my Bachelor's thesis Terävyysalueen käyttö elokuvassa (The Use of Depth of Field in Film) I review the subject in terms of technical, practical and narrative aspects. I examine by what means one can affect depth of field and what kind of technical solutions have been developed to control it. I wanted to look at what else depth of field can be used for other than just to create beautiful images and visual effects of which I was accustomed to. Shallow and deep focus can also help tell the story, introduce the characters and create a mood in different ways and I wanted to take a closer look at how these devices are being used.

I also researched how in the history of cinema the popularity of different kinds of depth of field has varied as a result of the impact of not just trends but also the development of technology. Various inventions have in their turn forced the filmmakers to do certain kinds of cinematography or given them an opportunity to experiment and have a play with the depth of field whereas I am more familiar with contemporary practices.

Finally, I examine the practical part of the Bachelor's thesis, short film Hypnos, and in particular how shallow focus was used in it. Originally, the use of shallow focus was intended to be just a visual feature but throughout the process it turned out to be a useful tool that contributed to the storytelling.
