KÄSITYÖLÄISELÄMÄÄ JYVÄSKYLÄN VANHALLA PIHALLA : Museohenkilökunnan asujen suunnittelu

Abstract

Toimeksiantona oli suunnitella Vanhan pihan museohenkilökunnalle 1800-luvun lopun tyyliset asut. Kesällä 2012 avattava Vanha piha on Keski-Suomen museon uusi museoalue, jossa esitellään 1800-luvun käsityöläisten elämää. Tavoitteena oli suunnitella asuista historiallisesti uskottavia, jotta tilaaja,Keski-Suomen museo, voisi hyödyntää niitä. Historiallisen uskottavuuden takaamiseksi toteutettiin tutkimus. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin valokuvien ja materiaalinäytteiden avulla, kuinka 1800-luvun lopun käsityöläiset pukeutuivat.

Tutkimus oli luonteeltaan laadullinen, ja siinä sovellettiin etnografian menetelmiä. Aluksi aiheeseen tutustuttiin teorian kautta 1800-luvun Jyväskylään historiallisena ympäristönä. Myös 1800-luvun lopun pukeutumista tutkittiin teorian kautta. Varsinainen tutkimus suoritettiin havainnoimalla kuva ja materiaaliaineistoa. Kuva-aineisto valikoitiin Keski-Suomen museon kuva-arkistosta. Materiaaliaineisto valikoitiin Keski-Suomen museon aineistokokoelmista. Havainnot kirjattiin, ja havainnoista laadittiin analyysi ja yhteenveto.

Tutkimuksessa saatujen tulosten pohjalta suunniteltiin kolme naisten asua ja kolme miesten asua. Suunnittelutyön lähtökohtana olivat yleisyys ja variaatio. Asujen tuli noudattaa tutkimuksessa esiin nousseita yleisiä pukeutumisen linjoja, mutta myös nostaa esiin erilaisia variaatioita. Suunnitelmien pohjalta piirrettiin kuusi esityskuvaa. Esityskuvat koottiin lyhyiden kuvailujen kanssa suunnitelmakansioon.

Tutkimus toi uutta tietoa 1800-luvun käsityöläisten pukeutumisesta yksiin kansiin. Tutkimuksessa esiin nousseet asiat olivat osittain ristiriidassa teoriatiedon kanssa, ja näistä ristiriidoista on mahdollista löytää useita uusia tutkimusaiheita. Keski-Suomen museo tulee hyödyntämään opinnäytetyön tuloksina syntyneitä suunnitelmia puvustaessaan Vanhan pihan henkilökuntaa.

The assignment was to design late 19th century style outfits for the museum staff in the Old Courtyard in Jyväskylä. The Old Courtyard is the new museum area of the Museum of Central Finland. It presents craftsmen’s lives in Jyväskylä in the late 19th century. It will be opened in summer 2012. The aim of the thesis was to design historically credible outfits, so that the Museum of Central Finland could make good use of the designs. To guarantee the historical authenticity, a study was conducted in which it was examined, with the help of photographs and material samples, how the craftsmen of the late 19th century were dressed up.

The study was qualitative and the methods of ethnographic research were applied. The first step was to get acquainted with the late 19th century Jyväskylä through theory. Furthermore, the clothing of the time period in question was studied through theory. The actual study was conducted by observing photographs and material samples. The photographic data was selected from the photograph archives of the Museum of Central Finland. Material samples were selected from the material collections of the Museum of Central Finland. The observations were written down, analyzed and summed up.

On the basis of the results, three women’s and three men’s outfits were designed. As a starting point for the design work were frequency and variation: the outfits were to be in line with the common features that emerged in the study, but also show different kinds of variations. Six illustrations were drawn on the basis of the designs. Illustrations and short descriptions were gathered to a design portfolio.

The study brought new information about how the late 19Th century’s craftsmen were dressed up. There were some contradictions between the results of the study and the theory. On the basis of these contradictions many new themes for research could be found. The Museum of Central Finland is going to use the designs when costuming the staff of the Old Courtyard.
