Aiheen tekeminen tutuksi konkreettisten esimerkkien keinoin on kuitenkin tärkeä lisä olemassa olevalle tiedolle. The goals of this functional Bachelor’s thesis was to discuss concrete ways to support children’s development of emotional skills among those parents, who take part to Åberg’s open day-care centre’s activities and also to offer new models for the cooperation partner on how to act with an emotional skills theme. The aim was to make emotional skills more familiar through acting together, conversation and showing materials, and by showing as simple examples as possible to use at home. This way the thesis was to support parenting and parents’ abilities to support their children’s emotional skills development. The methods used in the activities were play, stories, short rhymes and music. In addition, there was peer support conversation groups among parents. The activities were performed in Åberg’s open day-care centre in different groups: a baby club, open day-care-club and among parents, whose children were taking part in the club at the same time.
The theoretical framework discussed the most essential things related to emotional skills: socioemotional development, emotional intelligence and emotional skills, self-regulation and mentalization. Mentalization is introduced from children’s perspective and also from the perspective of parenting. Supporting parenting is introduced from the perspective of early childhood education and family work, which reflected the study orientations of the authors of this thesis.
The thesis reached the goals that were set to it. According to the feedback given by the parents who took part in the functional part of the thesis, the study provided new information and new ways to handle emotional skills at home. Cooperation partner felt that they had received new ideas to work with the theme and saw the need of peer support in the families taking part in the open day-care centre’s activities.
Based on this thesis one could say, that parents nowadays have a lot of information about emotional skills. Making the subject more familiar by concrete examples is still important addition to that knowledge. Also, the need of peer support and support for one’s parenting became an important part of the activities.
