Vertaistuen merkitys päihdekuntoutujalle

Abstract

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kuvata päihdekuntoutuksen läpikäyneiden kokemuksia vertaistuen merkityksestä heidän kuntoutumiselleen. Tavoitteena oli tuottaa tietoa vertaistuki-toiminnan kehittämiseksi yksikössä. Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin yhteistyössä Kokkolan ensi- ja turvakoti ry:n kanssa. Varsinainen yhteistyökumppani oli Ensikoti Iida ja siellä kuntoutuksessa olleet asiakkaat.

Opinnäytetyön menetelmänä oli laadullinen tutkimus, ja aineistonkeruun menetelmänä olivat teemahaastattelut. Haastattelut toteutuivat yhtenä ryhmähaastatteluna ja yhtenä yksilöhaastatteluna. Haastateltavat olivat Ensikoti Iidan entisiä asiakkaita. Haastattelun runko muodostui opinnäytetyön tutkimuskysymyksistä. Haastattelun teemoina olivat vertaistukiryhmän merkitys kuntoutuksen aikana ja sen jälkeen, vertaistukiryhmään motivoituminen, vertaistuen haasteet, vertaistuen järjestäminen ja vertaistuen kehittäminen.

Vertaistukiryhmät koettiin erittäin merkittäviksi tekijöiksi kuntoutumiseen kiinnittymiselle. Päihdekuntoutujilla heräsi vertaistukiryhmiin osallistuessaan monenlaisia tunteita, joiden käsittelyyn he kokivat tarvitsevansa työntekijöiden apua ja tukea. Vertaistuen koettiin herättävän sekä negatiivisia että positiivisia tunteita, ja vertaistukea pidettiin tärkeänä sekä antajan että saajan roolissa. Tutkimuksen tuloksia voidaan hyödyntää Ensikoti Iidan toiminnassa sekä laajemmin muissakin päihdekuntoutusyksiköissä. Tulokset voivat olla käyttökelpoisia myös muissa toimintaympäristöissä, esimerkiksi mielenterveystyössä.

The purpose of this research was to describe the meaning of peer support for those who had gone through drug rehabilitation. The goal was to produce more information about developing peer support in the unit. The thesis was accomplished in collaboration with Kokkola Mother and Child Home Association. The actual partner was Iida Mother and Child Home and the clients who had been there in rehabilitation.

The method of the thesis was a qualitative research. The material was collected by two theme interviews: a group interview and an individual interview. The interviewees were former clients of Iida Mother and Child Home and the thesis` research questions formed the base of the interview. The themes of the interview were: peer support group`s importance during the rehabilitation and after that, how to get motivated to the peer support groups, the challenges of peer support, arranging peer support and developing peer support.

The peer groups were experienced as a very remarkable factor in helping to commit to rehabilitation. Participating in the peer groups raised many feelings among the drug rehabilitees and they experienced they needed the employees` help and support for handling those feelings. The rehabilitees experienced peer support to raise both negative and positive feelings and peer support was held important as both giving and receiving it.

The results of this research can be used in the operations of Iida Mother and Child Home and wider in other drug rehabilitation units. The results can be useful also in other environments, such as mental health operators.
