The purpose of this thesis was to produce an information booklet for nursing students on abortion, female genital mutilation, and multicultural patient guidance. The thesis aimed to produce a clear and informative booklet that promotes students’ awareness on abortion, female genital mutilation, and multicultural care work from the nurse’s perspective. The thesis was co-operated with Laurea University of Applied Sciences and is part of the ''Terveyden edistäminen'' project. The aim was to produce an information booklet that would serve as part of the teaching material for the Gynecology and Obstetrics course.
The theoretical framework of the thesis deals with female genital mutilation, different methods of induced abortion, medical and non-medical pain management, pregnancy prevention, follow-up in health care, and multicultural patient guidance.
The thesis was functional and the final output of it was an information booklet. The content of the information booklet consisted of the theoretical information of the thesis. There was little research on these topics in Finland. In recent years, female genital mutilation and multicultural patient guidance has sparked an open debate. The multiculturalism term had begun to be used as a concept in the 1990s as immigration increased. Despite this, anti- female genital mutilation work did not land in Finland until 2002. International articles and sources used in the thesis were recent ones.
Feedback on the information booklet was collected from nursing students at Laurea and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and professionals in the nursing field. The feedback was provided by 22 people, which most of them rated the information booklet as successful. Respondents also provided written feedback, which was taken into account in the final output. The feedback given through to the questionnaire was entirely voluntary and took place anonymously via an electronic network due to the specific circumstances of the COVID- 19 pandemic.
