The purpose of this Bachelor’s thesis was to produce a written guide to support the work of hospice volunteer workers in the field of basic nursing home units. The aim was to produce a guide that supports the hospice volunteers in the nursing home environment. The meaning of the guide is to give practical information about hospice volunteering in nursing home units, help hospice volunteers to settle to the nursing home environment, clarify the role of a volunteer worker and nursing personnel of the nursing home units and give practical examples of the work as a hospice volunteer. The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis was also to develop the hospice work in public nursing homes, because practising hospice care in basic nursing home units is increasing.
The theoretical framework of this Bachelor’s thesis contains information about the care of an ending life containing palliative and hospice care, the need and the meaning of hospice volunteers as part of practising the high quality hospice care, and the methods of service design used in the development process. This Bachelor’s thesis was executed in collaboration with Suomen Raamattuopistosäätiö (SRO) and was a part of their voluntary project called Lohtua Läsnäolosta. The project is funded by Ministry of Social affairs and Health issues. The development methods of Service design were utilized in the making of this bachelor’s thesis.
Customer understanding is substantial in service design, and it was collected by participating a training session arranged by SRO for the hospice volunteers, by a workshop arranged by the Bachelor thesis workers, by having conversations with the hospice volunteers and the professionals practicing hospice care and also by following current news and discussions about the topic. Customer understanding was also collected by orientating to the studies about the topic, which were read both in Finnish and in English.
The first version of the guide was created based on the theoretical framework and the ideas from the workshop. An evaluation and feedback were collected from four hospice volunteer workers and our collaboration partners from the project Lohtua Läsnäolosta. Due to the feedback, the guide was developed to respond even better the needs and hopes of the target group. Designing process of the guide was led by design drivers, which were created in the beginning of the development process. In the future the customer understanding and the guide collected and developed with this Bachelor’s thesis can be used in practicing and developing hospice volunteer work.
