With a proper warehouse layout design, it is possible to create efficient, safe and practical warehouse environments. Information about requirements of the warehouse, the nature of the goods, the used warehouse equipment and the needed warehouse activities are the base of the layout design process. The optimal warehousing solution can be found in between efficiency and practicality.
The main theme of the thesis is efficient and user-friendly layout design. The knowledge base of the thesis has been gathered through interviews of warehouse workers and other people familiar with warehouse layouts or product requirements and from literature of warehousing theory and warehouse layout design.
The case of the thesis covers the layout design of the client’s new warehouse facilities, in which different kinds of items are stored. The goal for the project is to identify the most space-efficient and practical warehousing equipment, layouts and material flows for the case warehouse and calculate the number of possible pallet positions. The principles of warehouse layout design, area calculations and warehouse theory are introduced in the theoretical part of the thesis. The theory supports decision making in the practical part, in which the theory is being used for calculating the number of pallet positions and designing the warehouse layouts for the case warehouse. The output of the thesis includes the layouts and pallet position quantities, which are designed according to the requirements of the stored items and the limitations of space in the case warehouses.
