This thesis is about what kind of theatrical methods can be used to add experientiality to a room with a virtual projection. During the thesis process a performance pilot was created to the Better quality of life from virtuality -seminar day, organized by The Virtual Medicine project. The seminar was held at the Kotikunnas service house in Turku on December 3, 2019.
The performance pilot became a multi-sensory experience, which was written into the form of the hot air balloon flight. During the pilot, the performer led the participants into the experience in a room, where virtual video was projected on the ceiling and walls.
The performance pilot was implemented during the seminar day for two groups each with five participants. The groups and their composition were decided by the service house. The first group consisted entirely of nursing personnel. The second group included three seniors and two from nursing staff.
The thesis project was carried out as a research and development activity with a constructive approach. The constructive research resulted in a performance pilot. The research material was gathered by reading the relevant literature on the topic. Previous and related studies and projects were also examined from the Internet. In addition, the material has been collected through observation and group interviews during the process.
As a result of the study, the nursing personnel advocated the development of the piloted activities. All respondents consider it suitable for everyone, for all target groups. The use of scents, sounds and projected video, was perceived as particularly positive by the participants. The remarkable thing was, that the seniors felt like they were flying high in the sky during the performance pilot.
The results of the study can be used to recommend this kind of activities for the elderly. With theatrical methods, which are included to a virtual projection, can increace communality, can help to create memories and break away from everyday life for a moment.
