Pelkäävän lapsen hammashoito - suuhygienistiopiskelijoiden käsityksiä

Abstract

Hammashoitopelko on asia, jonka monet aikuiset kertovat juontuvan lapsuusajoilta. Hammashoitopelko voi syntyä jo yhdestä huonosta hoitokerrasta ja siksi on tärkeää, että suun terveydenhuollon ammattilaiset osaavat toimia sellaisella tavalla, josta potilaalle jää positiivinen kokemus.

Opinnäytetyömme kuvaa ensimmäisen vuoden suuhygienistiopiskelijoiden käsityksiä lasten hammashoitopelosta. Valitsimme ensimmäisen vuoden opiskelijat sen takia, että heillä ei ole vielä kliinistä kokemusta lasten kanssa työskentelystä. Tutkimuksemme oli kvalitatiivinen eli laadullinen tutkimus. Tutkimusaineiston keräsimme teemahaastattelulla, jonka kysymykset pohjautuivat tietoperustaan. Teemahaastattelukysymyksiä oli yhteensä kuusi ja tarkentavia kysymyksiä kaksi.

Haastattelimme viittä ensimmäisen vuoden opiskelijaa kahdella erillisellä haastattelukerralla. Vaikka haastateltavien määrä olikin hyvin pieni, saamamme tulokset olivat yhteneväisiä keskenään ja aiemman tutkimustiedon mukaisia. Yhdeksi merkittävimmäksi hammashoitopelon aiheuttajaksi nousi lapsen omat negatiiviset hammashoitokokemukset ja muiden kertomat kokemukset.

Suuhygienistin on tärkeää tunnistaa hammashoitopelkoinen lapsi ja osata toimia hänen kanssaan tilanteen vaatimalla tavalla. Suun terveydenhuollon ammattilaisilla on suuri vaikutus lasten hammashoitopelon syntyyn, ehkäisyyn ja lievittämiseen. Siksi on tärkeää, että suun terveydenhuollon ammattilaisilla on mahdollisimman kattava tietopohja hammashoitopelosta.

Dental fear is an issue that many adults tell originate from their childhood. Dental fear can come about from a one bad treatment experience and therefore it is important that the dental healthcare professionals know how to work in such a way that patient can have a positive experience from dental treatment.

Our thesis describes the perceptions of children’s dental fear according to first year students of dental hygienists. We chose the students in their first year because they do not have any clinical experience with working with children yet. Our study was a qualitative study. We collected the study material by conducting a theme interview which was based on the knowledge gathered from previous studies and our readings. There were six questions and two specifying questions on the theme interview.

We interviewed five first year dental hygienist students on two separate interview times. Even though the number of interviewees was very small the results we got were very similar with each other and consistent with previous studies. Some significant factors causing dental fear were the child’s own negative experiences in dental healthcare and other people’s experiences.

It is important for a dental hygienist to recognize a child suffering from dental fear and know how to work with them in the way the situation requires. The professionals in dental healthcare have a great impact on the formation of dental fear, its prevention, and its alleviation. Therefore, it is important that the dental healthcare professionals have as much inclusive knowledge about dental fear.
