He kokivat itselleen luontevaksi olla lähellä kuolevaa ihmistä eivätkä he pelänneet kuolemaa. Tukihenkilöitä motivoi halu auttaa ja olla hyödyksi. Omaisten osuus tukihenkilötoiminnassa oli suuri. Tukihenkilöt ohjasivat ja neuvoivat saattohoidossa olevan potilaan omaisia ja tukivat heitä esimerkiksi keskustelemalla. Tukihenkilöt arvostivat hoitohenkilökuntaa. He olivat tyytyväisiä tapaan, miten heidät otetaan palliatiivisella osastolla vastaan.
The aim of the thesis was to study the experiences of volunteers in hospice care in Hyvinkää. The purpose of the study was to gather experiences of hospital volunteers, focusing on what motivates them, what they feel they gain from their work, and what helps them cope. The purpose was also to find out the kind of training wanted by the volunteers and development suggestions they have in terms of the work. The partners in the thesis were the hospital priests of the Hyvinkää parish.
The thesis is a qualitative study, and a thematic interview was used to collect the data. Three support persons were interviewed in the spring of 2019. They each had more than one experience relating the work. The interview was transcribed, after which the material was analyzed by inductive content analysis. The results of the thesis were formed on the basis of the analysis.
According to the results of the thesis, the support staff worked in hospice care because they had had previous experiences of the death of close people. They felt natural near a dying person, and were not afraid of death. Support people are motivated by a desire to help and be useful. The share of relatives in support personnel work was large. The support persons guided and advised the relatives of the patient in care, and supported them, for example, through speech. The support staff appreciated the nursing staff. They were pleased with the way they were received in the palliative ward. Criticism of the nursing staff arose when the support person noticed incompetence in palliative care. Support staff training was welcomed. Hospital priests were perceived as approachable and their support in the operation was appreciated. In the future, the support staff hoped for more opportunities to unravel the ideas raised by practical situations in a group with others.
The interviews raised the question of why there are so few requests for support staff. In the future, it would be good to consider whether the messages from support staff reaches patients and their relatives through the medical staff. One support person wondered whether volunteering could be a branch of the palliative ward work, with the ward acting as the organizing body.
