Pyhän kokemus musiikissa : Näkemyksiä musiikin syvällisestä luonteesta

Abstract

Tämän opinnäytetyön aihe on pyhän kokeminen musiikissa. Työ on tutkimusotteeltaan fenomenologishermeneuttinen kirjallisuuskatsaus, jolla pyritään syventämään ymmärrystä pyhän kokemuksen luonteesta.

Työssä määritellään ensin pyhän käsitettä ja pyhän kokemusta, ja sitten eritellään niitä tekijöitä, jotka vaikuttavat pyhän kokemiseen musiikissa. Näitä tekijöitä löytyi niin uskontotieteen, musiikkitieteen, musiikkipsykologian ja -filosofian kuin suomalaisen kansatieteen piiristä. Tärkeimmiksi määritteleviksi tekijöiksi pyhälle musiikilliselle kokemukselle nousivat sanoinkuvaamattomuus, ykseyden kokemus ja transsendentti.

Musiikillisen kokemuksen tutkiminen on haastavaa, sillä musiikin vaikutusmekanismit ovat kompleksisia ja ihmisen kokemukseen vaikuttaa jokaisen kokijan oma tausta, arvot ja elinympäristö. Lisäksi termin "pyhä" käyttäminen asettaa omat haasteensa sen uskonnollisen konnotaation takia. Näistä haasteista huolimatta, tutkimuksen tuloksena pyhän kokemuksen musiikissa voi sanoa olevan kaikille mahdollinen väylä olla yhteydessä ihmisen ja elämän syvimpään todellisuuteen, josta on vaikea puhua sanoilla.

The subject of this thesis is the experience of sacredness in music. This study is a phenomenological and hermeneutical literary overview that aims to deepen the understanding of the nature of the sacred experience.

The study starts with determining the concept of the sacredness as well as the sacred experience in general. It then continues to analyze the different aspects that affect the sacred experience specifically in music. These factors were found from the fields of theology, mu-sicology, music psychology, music philosophy, ethnomusicology and Finnish ethnology. The most important defining factors of the sacred musical experience are that it is ineffable and there is an experience of unity and transcendence.

The study of musical experience is challenging because of the complex nature of music, and because the human experience is always affected by the experiencer's own back-ground, values and living environment. Also, one should be mindful of using the term of sacredness because it has such a strong religious connotation. Despite of these challeng-es, the result of this thesis is that experiencing the sacredness in music is a means to be in connection with the profound nature of human life, and this experience is possible for any-one to gain.
