The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper insight into how the fashion industry relates to sustainable and ethical fashion, and in what way it reflects on consumers’ buying behavior. This study is thus delimited from a fashion industry’s perspective, but because the cooperation of the production and the consumption go hand in hand consumers are also looked into. A comparison is made to gain an insight if there is enough knowledge and transparency in the communication between these two. This has been conducted with the help of the data collection method survey. This is to find out why there are problems with the sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry and in what way the fashion industry can communicate and act to promote a more sustainable future.
The results show that the fashion industry and consumers have equal knowledge about sustainable and ethical fashion. Despite this, there is still not enough information and transparency because the lack of sufficient sustainability communication within the fashion industry. The fashion industry doesn’t know how to promote sustainability and ethics practically. The consumers experience that the genuine responsibility of the fashion industry is inadequate. The people of the industry that participated in the survey experienced that the costs control the direction. However, the people of the industry could agree on that transparency and communication should be an ongoing process. Together with the consumers can they cooperate for a more sustainable and ethical future.
