Sovelluskehitys älytelevisioille : case Lasten Areena

Abstract

Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli saavuttaa ymmärrystä älytelevisiosovellusten kehitystyöstä sekä kehittämisessä ilmenevistä haasteista ja erityispiirteistä. Tarkastelun keskiöön otettiin Yleisradion Lasten Areena -suoratoistopalvelun uuden älytelevisiosovelluksen kehitysprosessi ja siihen osallistuneiden sovelluskehittäjien omakohtaiset kokemukset. Tutkimuskysymyksiksi valittiin: 1) ”Millainen projekti Yleisradion Lasten Areena -äly-tv-sovellus on ollut sovelluskehittämisen näkökulmasta?” ja 2) ”Mitä Lasten Areena -äly-tv-sovelluksen kehittämistyöstä voidaan oppia äly-tv-sovellusten kehittämisen suhteen?”

Tutkimus toteutettiin haastattelemalla sovelluksen kehittämiseen osallistuneita sovelluskehittäjiä puolistrukturoidun teemahaastattelun keinoin. Lisäksi työssä hyödynnettiin kehitystiimin retrospektiiveissä tiimin jäsenten esiin nostamia huomioita työtavoista ja -prosesseista. Kerätty aineisto analysoitiin aineistolähtöisen sisällönanalyysin menetelmin teemoittelemalla, ja siitä nostettiin esiin etenkin eri haastateltavien kokemuksissa toistuneita teemoja.

Työssä esitellään myös älytelevisiota ilmiönä koskevaa tietoa, kuten aiheeseen liittyviä tilastoja ja tutkimuksia. Käytetyt lähteet osoittavat, että suurin osa myytävistä televisiolaitteista on jo älytelevisioita, mutta näiden laitteiden käyttäjät eivät ainakaan Suomessa juurikaan hyödynnä laitteiden potentiaalia älylaitteena. Kuitenkin esim. Yle Areenan käyttömäärät ovat viime vuosina kasvaneet nopeasti myös älytelevisioilla käytettävissä sovelluksissa.

Opinnäytetyön tuloksista oli pääteltävissä, että älytelevisiosovelluksen kehittämiseen liittyy joitakin erityispiirteitä, jotka tulisi ottaa huomioon kehitystyössä. Nämä erityispiirteet johtuvat niin laitteiden teknisistä ominaisuuksista, testaamiseen liittyvistä reunaehdoista kuin laitteiden käyttötavan omalaatuisuudesta. Aineiston analyysissä nostettiin näistä havaituista erityispiirteistä suorituskyky, testaus, standardinmukaisuus ja yhteensopivuus, käyttöliittymät ja käytettävyys sekä etätyö ja kommunikaatio.

Työn aineistossa toistuivat monet haasteellisiksi koetut asiat, mutta siinä esiintyi myös paljon positiivisia huomioita niin äly-tv-tekniikan kehityssuunnasta, lopputuotteen laadusta, kuin kehittäjien henkilökohtaisen tietotaidon nopeasta kasvusta.

The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the development of smart TV applications, as well as the challenges and unique characteristics that arise in the development process. The focus of the study was in the development process of the new smart TV application of the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle’s Lasten Areena (Kids’ Areena) streaming service. The following research questions were selected for the study: 1) “What kind of a project has Yle's Lasten Areena smart TV application been from the point of view of application development?” and 2) “What can be learned from the development work done in terms of the development of smart TV applications?”

The study was carried out by interviewing application developers involved in the development of the Lasten Areena application, utilizing the methods of a semi-structured thematic interview. In addition, notes written by the members of the development team in retrospective sessions were used to achieve a deeper understanding of working methods and processes. The material from the study was analysed by using the methods of data-driven content analysis, such as thematic analysis and coding.

In addition, the thesis also examines statistics and studies about the smart television as a technological phenomenon and a sign of technological advancement. The literature used in this study show that most of the TVs sold in Finland at the moment are smart TVs, but the users of such TVs, at least in Finland, do not make much use of all the potential features of the equipment as a smart device. However, in recent years, for example, Yle Areena's usage has rapidly increased on smart TVs as well as on other platforms.

From the findings of this thesis, it can be concluded that there are some special characteristics associated with the development of a smart TV application that should be taken into account in the development process. These characteristics are commonly associated with the technical characteristics of the TV equipment, the conditions related to testing and the way the equipment and software are used by the end-users.

The majority of the aspects that were perceived as challenging were mentioned repeatedly in the research material by the developers, but there were also many positive remarks concerning the development of smart TV applications, including the quality of the end product as well as the rapid growth of developers' professional knowledge on the field of smart TVs.
