The goal of this thesis was to create a guide which could be used as educational material for nursing students. The guide includes the ABCDEF protocol, which helps nurses to assess a child suffering from respiratory distress during infection. The aim of this thesis was to support the learning of the main content of a course in children’s clinical nursing. The guide helps students make a good assessment of care needs. The partner in this thesis was Diaconia University of Applied Sciences.
This thesis was carried out as a practice-based thesis where the outcome was a poster. The process of developing this practical guide included gathering evidence-based information about breathing difficulties in children during infection, diagnosing and analyzing children’s vital functions by ABCDEF-approaches, and graphic design. For the guide to be functional, it was important to establish what the steps in assessing a child’s breathing difficulties were and how the guide could be made clear and easy to understand for readers both visually and in terms of content.
The guide was tested in practice in both workshops and student simulation environments. Feedback was collected from students and teachers in these situations through a structured feedback questionnaire with an unaided open comment section at the end for more personalized development feedback. The feedback questionnaire was analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
According to the overall feedback, most students agreed with the statements that measured the effectiveness of the guide. The questionnaire comment feedback suggested reducing the amount of text and increasing the number of visuals. However, since most students, teachers and the partner were satisfied with the guide as it was there was no need to change the guide. The guide was approved by the partner and was introduced as an instructional tool for teaching clinical nursing of children.
Keywords: vital functions, respiratory insufficiency, clinical examination, children, learning materials, simulation training
