Magic: the Gathering -keräilykorttipeli sijoittamisen näkökulmasta

Abstract

Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli selvittää Magic: The Gathering -tuotteita sijoittamisen näkökulmasta. Opinnäytetyössä selvitettiin syitä niiden kysyntään, sekä minkälaisia riskejä näiden tuotteiden omistaminen ja jälleenmyynti sisältävät. Lisäksi työssä esiteltiin näiden tuotteiden jälkimarkkinoiden kaupankäyntialustoja. Tarkoituksena oli antaa yleiskuva Magic: The Gathering -tuotteista sijoituskohteena ja selvittää niiden tuottomahdollisuuksia verrattuna perinteiseen sijoituskohteeseen.

Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin kvantitatiivisella tutkimusaineistolla. Tutkimusaineistona käytettiin Magic: The Gathering -tuotteiden hintahistoriaa, jota verrattiin Amerikan markkinoita kuvaavaan S&P500 indeksiin. Tavoitteena on käyttää samoilla markkinoilla toimivaa indeksiä ja Magic: The Gatheringin hintahistoriaa, jotta valuuttamuunnoksia ei tarvittaisi.

Selvityksessä havaittiin Magic: The Gathering -tuotteilla olevan hankalat ja riskialttiit markkinat, jossa on kuitenkin mahdollisuus tuottoihin. Tuottojen takaamiseksi tarvittiin kuitenkin otollinen myyntihetki. Kokonaisuudessaan voitiin todeta Magic: The Gathering -tuotteiden olevan potentiaalisia sijoituskohteita niihin perehtyneille sijoittajille.

The aim of this thesis was to clarify what “Magic: The Gathering” as investing products can suggest. This thesis answers the question of what kinds of reasons there are behind the demand for these kinds of products, and what kind of risks are involved in owning and re-selling them. The goal of the thesis was to overview “Magic: The Gathering” products as collectible investments and clarify their return opportunities compared to more traditional investments.

This thesis was carried out using quantitative research methods. The research data was the historical pricing data of “Magic: The Gathering” products and comparing it to S&P500 index price history. For making comparisons, the thesis used data from the same currencies, so that no conversions would be needed.

As a result of the analysis conducted in the thesis, it became clear that “Magic: The Gathering” products have potential to yield good returns, but their markets are tricky and risky. Also, it was observed that the time of sale needs to be quite substantial in order to secure profits. Overall, it could be said that “Magic: The Gathering” products have potential as investments for those who are familiar with the game and are willing to put time and effort in researching undervalued cards and products.
