The purpose of the group was to engage mental disorder patients into pleasant activity. The main goal was to get concrete proof of how solution-focused gamified methods work for patients with mental illness in group activities. Additionally, the goal was to achieve deeper knowledge of solution-focused methods and to find new tools for the field of mental health.
The thesis was conducted in collaboration with Niemikoti Foundation´s Malmi and it was carried out in the group space of Malmi Day Center in the autumn of 2020. The group played various solution-focused games that support positive mental health. The purpose of the games was to get participants to focus on positive things in their lives and to discuss them. The games that were played were the Strength cards, the board game Nestori Nurjamieli ja Hyvän Mielen Konkarit and The Positive Remembrance cards, which were all downloaded from the website of Mieli ry, as well as the board game Towards the Future, which was developed by the authors.
The participants were asked to rate the group’s activities with a smiley feedback form and oral feedback. In addition, the day centre´s instructors gave their own assessments of the group. Based on the feedback received, the group was pleasant, and it made the participants reflect on their lives from many different perspectives. The instructors thought that the games and the materials used in the group could also be used in other activities, in their centre and elsewhere.
Because of the COVID-19 situation, the start date and the number of participants in the group were modified from the original plan. Initially, the group size was thought to be bigger, but the activities were successful even though the group was smaller. The participants in the group were already familiar with each other. The total number of participants was five and each time three or four participants were present. Because of COVID-19, there were other matters to consider as well, such as physical distancing and using visors
Keywords: gamification, mental disorder patient, mental health, solution-focused
