Development of the motor skills is important part of child’s growth and development. We have observed that supporting and developing fine motor skills is often paid less attention than gross motor skills while planning kindergarten pedagogy. Developing and supporting fine motor skills helps child to learn how to be independent and to manage daily situations.
The subject of our functional thesis is developing and supporting children’s fine motor skills in daily life of kindergarten. The product was a guide to the daily life in kindergarten. The guide contains theoretical knowledge of fine motor skills, the age level development and observing of fine motor skills as well as information about the problems in learning. In addition to theoretical knowledge, the guide introduces ideas about developing fine motor skills in kindergartens daily life situations.
Our thesis was made in cooperation with an early childhood education unit of the city of Pori, kindergarten Meijumäki. The goal of the guide is to increase the knowledge of the educators about children’s fine motor skills as well as to give ideas for developing and supporting fine motor skills in the daily life of kindergarten. Our intention was to visit at the kindergarten to introduce the guide for the educators and to put the ideas in to effect with the educators and the children. The visits in the kindergarten were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The guide that was the product of our thesis was noticed to give educators more practical ideas on developing and supporting children’s fine motor skills. Feedback survey showed that the educators are going to use the guide as a tool on planning pedagogical action in the future.
