Aivovamman saaneen kuntoutujan kokemukset koira-avusteisesta fysioterapiasta

Abstract

Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli tutkia aivovamman saaneen kuntoutujan ja fysioterapeutin kokemuksia koira-avusteisesta fysioterapiasta. Opinnäytetyössä selvitettiin, miten kuntoutuja ja fysioterapeutti kokivat koiran käytön terapian aikana ja eroaako koira-avusteinen fysioterapia ilman koiraa toteutuvasta fysioterapiasta ja mitä tulee huomioida, kun terapiassa on mukana eläin.

Opinnäytetyö oli tapaustutkimus, joka toteutettiin fysioterapeuteille tehtynä teemahaastatteluna ja kuntoutujaa havainnoimalla. Teema-alueet olivat kuntoutujan ja koiran yhteistyö, fysioterapeutti ja koira sekä fysioterapia ja koira. Kahta fysioterapeuttia haastateltiin yksilöhaastatteluna. Koira-avusteista fysioterapiaa tekevän fysioterapeutin haastattelu sekä terapian kulku videoitiin. Analyysi tehtiin sisältöanalyysin tavoin.

Opinnäytyön tulokset osoittavat, että kuntoutuja koki koiran käytön positiivisesti. Havainnoinnissa ilmeni myönteisiä reaktioita. Kuntoutuja motivoitui pitkäaikaiseen harjoitteluun. Kuntoutujalla ilmeni spontaania puhetta enemmän koira-avusteisessa fysioterapiassa. Molemmat fysioterapeutit kokivat koira-avusteisen fysioterapian myönteiseksi, sillä siinä nähdään sellaisia asioita, mitä ilman koiraa tehtävässä fysioterapiassa ei tapahdu. Koira-avusteista fysioterapiaa suunnitellessa tulee huomioida niin koiran fyysiset kuin henkisetkin tarpeet.

Koira-avusteista fysioterapiaa voidaan soveltaa moniin kohderyhmiin. Koira-avusteista fysioterapiaa ollaan kehittämässä moniammatillisesti. Jatkotutkimusideaksi nousi lasten kokemusten tutkiminen koira-avusteisessa fysioterapiassa.

The purpose of this thesis was to examine the experiences of the patient and the physiotherapist in animal assisted physiotherapy. In this thesis under examination was how the patient and the physiotherapist experienced involving a dog in the healing process, how the animal assisted therapy differs from traditional therapy and what must be considered when having an animal participating in the process.

This thesis was a case study that was conducted by theme-interviewing physiotherapists and observing a patient. The topics of the interviews were the cooperation of the dog and the patient, the physiotherapist and the dog and the patient and the dog. The interview was conducted with two physiotherapists. The interviews were conducted as individual interviews. The interview of the animal assisted therapy conducting physiotherapist was videoed as well as was the animal assisted therapy itself.

The results of this thesis indicate that the patient had positive experiences involving a dog and the observations displayed positive reactions. The patient was motivated to long term practise. Both interviewed physiotherapists had positive views on animal assisted therapy, by concluding that in animal assisted therapy there are elements that are not present in traditional therapy. Additionally the dogs' physical and mental needs must be taken into consideration. Dog assisted physiotherapy can be utilized with many different target groups.

Dog assisted physiotherapy is being developed multiprofessionally. A further research idea could be studying experiences of children in dog assisted physiotherapy.
