Today batteries are required to have small size, large capacity, and the ability to handle large charging and discharging currents. These requirements have increased the interest in battery research and development.
The purpose of this thesis was to study the impedance changes in the lithium batteries, in its different states of charge, when the battery ages. At the same time, we attempted to determine whether the reduction of the battery capacity and impedance changes are related.
We chose three different chemical composition cell types to test in this thesis. The cell chemistries and their model were the most common commercially. The three chemistries were lithium nickel manganese cobolt oxide (LiNiMnCoO2) (NMC), lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) (LFP), and lithium titanate (Li2TiO3) (LTO). The cell model was 18650, so their length was 18 mm and diameters 65mm.
The cell impedance was measured in three different state of charge, 100 %, 60 % and 20 %. The NMC cell was measured after every 100 cycles, and the LFP and LTO cells after every 200 cycles. After the same amount of cycles, we measured the capacity of the cells.
The NMC cell capacity dropped to under 60 % in new cells, and the impedance increased by 30 %. The manufacturer had informed in the datasheet that when the capacity is under 70 % of the capacity of a new cell the cell is unusable. So, the ageing of NMC cell was finished. The LFP and LTO cells did not drop under 87 %, and the impedances stayed in 10 % in new batteries. From these numbers we can conclude that even though the impedances rose, the capacities dropped more in relation to the impedances. The change in the chemistry of the battery could explain this but further research in the battery chemistry would be needed.
