Päiväpetolintujen pesimäpaikkojen turvaaminen Pirkanmaan talousmetsissä : Metsäkeskuksen luonnonhoitohankkeen vaikutuksia

Abstract

Petolintujen pesimäpaikkojen turvaaminen Pirkanmaan talousmetsissä oli Pirkanmaan metsäkeskuksen vuosina 2010-2012 toteuttama luonnonhoitohanke. Hankkeen tavoitteena oli selvittää Pirkanmaalla pesivien petolintujen pesimäpaikkoja ja laatia pesimäympäristöön pesän huomioon ottava metsänhoitosuunnitelma. Hanke perustui metsänomistajien vapaaehtoisuuteen ja sen aikana metsäkeskus laati yhteensä 103 pesimäympäristön hoitosuunnitelmaa. Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli selvittää metsäkeskuksen luonnonhoitohankkeessa tehtyjen pesimäympäristön hoitosuunnitelmien, sekä hankkeen yhteydessä annetun neuvonnan vaikutuksia petolintujen pesämetsien nykyiseen tilanteeseen. Työn tilaajana toimi Suomen metsäkeskus.

Opinnäytetyön tutkimusmenetelminä käytettiin paikkatietoanalyysiä ja ilmakuvatulkintaa, jotka tehtiin keväällä 2019. Lisäksi osassa tutkimuksen kohteena olevissa pesämetsissä tehtiin maastokäynnit kesän 2019 aikana. Maastossa tarkastettiin 23 kohdetta ja muiden pesämetsien tilanne pystyttiin tarkastamaan paikkatietoanalyysin ja ilmakuvatulkinnan avulla. Tutkimusta varten haastateltiin 44 metsänomistajaa, joka on 50 % kaikista hankkeessa mukana olleista metsänomistajista. Haastattelut toteutettiin puhelimitse syksyllä 2020.

Kaikista hankkeessa mukana olleista pesäpuista 30 % on hävinnyt vuosien 2010-2019 välisen seurantajakson aikana ja pesäpuista, joiden sijaintiin oli tehty metsänkäyttöilmoitus 69 % oli hävinnyt. Tämän tutkimuksen mukaan yleisin pesämetsässä tehtäviin hakkuisiin johtanut syy oli metsäsuunnitelman mukainen hakkuun toimeenpano. Muita merkittäviä pesämetsissä toteutettujen hakkuiden ja pesäpuiden häviämiseen johtaneita syitä olivat kirjanpainajan aiheuttamat hyönteistuhot, juurikääpä sekä myrskytuhot. Pirkanmaan hankkeessa mukana olleista metsänomistajista kaksi on päätynyt vapaaehtoisen pesämetsän suojeluun METSO-ohjelman puitteissa. Vaikka pesäpuita on mennyt hakkuissa, niin kuitenkin 61 % hankkeessa mukana olleista pesämetsistä on edelleen soveltuvia haukkojen pesintään ja 56 % pesäpuista ei ole altistunut hakkuiden vaikutuksille.

Securing nest sites for birds of prey in forestry area in Tampere region was a nature conservation program implemented by the Pirkanmaa Forest Centre in 2010-2012. The target of the project was to sort out nesting sites in Tampere area and draw a forest management plan which takes the nest sites into consideration. The project was based on the volunteerism of the forest owners. During the project, the Forest Centre compiled a total of 103 nesting environment management plans. The purpose of this Bachelor’s thesis was to find out how the Pirkanmaa Forest Centre project has succeeded and how it has affected the nesting sites. Client of the work was Finnish Forest Centre.

The research methods of the thesis were spatial data analysis and aerial image interpretation, which were performed in the spring of 2019. Some of the nesting sites was inspected in forest during the summer 2019. Situation of 23 nesting sites was inspected by field study in forest and other nesting sites was inspected by spatial analysis and aerial photo. For this research 44 forest owners were interviewed, which covers 50 % of all forest owners of project. Telephone interviews with forest owners were conducted during the fall 2020.

The results show that 30% of all nesting trees involved in the project have disappeared during the 2010-2019 monitoring period. In the area where notification of forest use was made, 69% of the nest trees had disappeared. According this study, the most common reason for logging in the nest forest was operating according to the forest plan. Other significant causes of logging and loss of nesting trees were insect damage caused by the European spruce bark beetle, root rot, forest age and storm damage. Two of the forest owners involved in the project have ended up protecting their nest forests voluntary. The protection of these nesting forests has been implemented through the METSO-program. Although nesting trees have been felled, 61% of the nesting forests involved in the project are still suitable for hawk nesting and 56% of nests have not been exposed to the effects of felling.
