For this paper I investigated what effects the implementation of an automated accounts receivable can cause. The aim of this study is to outline how accounts receivable management takes place, what affects automation as well as what effects automation entails. In this thesis work I have chosen to focus on the managing of accounts payable, the automation of electronic financial administration in general and the different consequences of accounts payable automation. After gathering information about the automation process in theory, I compiled some of its effects into a model with four different perspectives, derived from the "Balanced Scorecard" method. In addition to the theory, I have collected my own data by interviewing experts who have worked with accounts payable and experts who have seen the automation process’ progress. I have also interviewed experts who have seen and analyzed the effects and consequences of accounts payable automation. The results of the interviews have been combined with the chosen perspectives from the theory. The study showed that for some effects the responses were in congruence between the participants. Most respondents thought that automation leads to increased efficiency, financial savings, and diversification of work tasks that makes them more interesting. For some questions however, opinions differed both within the respondent groups as well as between them. One opinion that all groups generally agreed on was that automation must not be carried out solely for the sake of automation. Depending on characteristics and needs can automation, according to the respondents, be profitable or in the worst case an awful choice. As the effects of automated accounts payable are not uniform depending on the respondents and their employer companies, it is neither useful nor possible to draw conclusions about the absolute superiority of automation or its total unprofitability. It is up to the company to decide which of the positive and negative effects are most significant.
