Tiivistelmä
Kilpirauhasen vajaatoiminta näkyy erilaisina oireina, kuten turvotuksina, mielialan vaihteluina ja väsymyksenä. Se voi heikentää merkittävästi elämänlaatua. Moni kokee sen vaikeahoitoiseksi sairaudeksi. Terveydenhuollon ammattilaisten toiminta vaikuttaa merkittävästi kilpirauhasen vajaatoiminnan hoitoon.
Hypothyroidism manifests itself in different symptoms such as swellings, mood swings and fatigue. Being perceived as a difficult illness to manage by many, it can significantly affect the quality of life. The treatment of hypothyroidism is greatly affected by the behaviour of health care professionals. Sensitivity, empathy, and respect are all qualities of a patient encounter. Trust is built by the nurse’s ability to be present, providing reliable information and listening to the patient actively. In addition, this enhances hope in the patient.
The purpose of the thesis was to give information to nursing staff about encountering a person suffering from the symptoms of hypothyroidism. The aim of the thesis was to increase the knowledge of nursing staff on living with hypothyroidism and suffering from its symptoms. The thesis was practice-based and the objective was to produce an instructional video for nursing staff.
In the video, a patient and a nurse meet at the nurse’s reception. The patient describes her symptoms and how the illness is affecting her life. The nurse encounters the patient by responding to her with facial expressions, gestures, and words, thus helping and offering support to the patient. In addition, the video provides information on issues related to encountering a patient.
It was found that more information is needed regarding the effect of hypothyroidism symptoms on patients’ quality of life. Further research on patients’ experiences with nursing staff should be conducted.
